There are a lot of different programs available on the web that say they will securely delete files from your hard drive.

How would one verify that these programs actually work as they say?

Umm that's a little uncalled for.
I'm trying to know which products are legit and which ones are snake oil.

Besides there isn't any software out there that can prevent someone recovering your files. It's just a question of WHO is trying to recover the data and how much they are willing to spend to do it.

The only way to prevent magentic residance recovery is to use some thermite to vaporize your hard drive.
