File corruption when saving to zip disk

Saving to my zip disk is a real bitch. If I save, say, an AutoCAD file to it, it takes a couple of minutes for it to stop doing whatever it is doing. It flashes its light intermitantly for 3 or 4 minutes, sometimes for so long that I couldn't be bothered trying and just pull the disk out. Reinstalling the drivers helps a little. Sometimes, if I save the AutoCAD file without a backup file, it goes OK, but when I save a backup it f*%$s up. This is annoying and wierd. I'm at the end of my tether with this thing!
I've got the latest drivers and use 98SE.

Thanks for your advice Ladi. Sorry, its an ATAPI/IDE 100MB zip drive (and 100MB media). They are both new Iomega manufactured products. Not getting a clicking noise. Ran the diagnostics and it created some .chk files (the stuffed up bit on the disk) These were from a zip file on the zip disk (confusing) I edited and it did't save it properly. I lost the entire file!(5MB) Do you know how I could recover any of the info from the zip file? I have saved files of around 600KB+ which have stuffed up.
