File access on replaced HD

Existing MB died and gone...Still have my present Hard Drive w/ XP Pro (SP3)32 bit with all apps and files sitting in my case.

With new motherboard, I am also getting new hard drive and new operating system- Vista Ultimate 64 bit w/SP1 ... this will be a clean new install.

I want to get existing files from the old hard drive to the new one. Problem is that there is an encryption program on the old HD and my MS Word files, emails, etc are encrypted, so that I have to run that prog, ie, enter my PW, so that the files "show up" on the old HD, so that I can copy them over to the new HD??

I don't understand how I can do this... HELP...

Also, considering what needs to be done, do I have to buy the "full" ($320.)version of Vista Ultimate 64 bit, or the "upgrade"($220.) version?

Just connect the HDD as a secondary drive. You'll be able to access the software on the drive like you could if it was still the primary drive. Then you can copy the data over as needed.

But, I thought in that setup, you could NOT run an app on the second (old) HD...

And I would have to do that...click on the "exe", enter PW, prog opens, click on "make files visible", then go to "C", get to file folder, and "copy-paste" to new HD...

Also... how 'bout my question on Vista full or upgrade?

thx...

I think you are right .. You will not be able to run the app on the slave or old drive ... You will need to reinstall your programs under Vista and then you should be able to open Word or anyother program you want. Same for any data files, encrypted or not, as long as you have the password for the encrypted files.
