Well, if nothing else, this contoversy should be worth a solid half-hour of human interest garbage in 2006, right?:|

I keep hoping that someone like OLN will run 24/7 coverage during the olympics totally free of the human interest/grubbing for ratings/pandering to the unwashed masses that don't understand the sports and need to know who to root for based on how much they suffered to get to the games. It's the same sh*t every two years....80% figure skating in the winter and 80% gymnastics in the summer.

And yes, the canadians were robbed.

Fausto1: Hot damn I completely agree - I'm sick of seeing hour long interviews in Prime Time followed by a 3 minute recap of the sport they skipped to bring us the interview.

Back to the figure skating - you know what the worst part is? There is NO recourse or reprocussions for the judges. They pick up thier gift baskets, give everyone the finger, and do it all again next time.

A bad ref call in any sport gets reviewed by the league - enough bad calls and a ref's rating falls below the limit and they get dropped from the league.

No such checks and balances in skating - they judges are supreme unto themselves.

Grrrrr....

I have a hard time accepting a "sport" that uses judges who arbitrarily pick a winner (that means figure skating, diving, gymnastics...). I just think that there should be a clear cut winner, and no one can say otherwise. This whole artistic presentation or whatever is complete BS too... I mean, if team A wears a tuxedo and cocktail dress on the ice, and team B wears potato sacks, yet they do the same routine exactly the same, guess who'll win.... Part of their mark is based on what they wear. I think that's pretty lame. It's nights like last night that make it hard to stomach these things being in the olympics. All the controversy over who really won...

Take track events for example. Whoever crosses the finish line wins; it doesn't matter if their running style looked better, just so long as they finished ahead of everyone else. Or hockey, you score a goal, you get a point. You score another, you get another point. Whoever has the most goals scored at the end of the game is the winner. Think, how would you like it if they made a new rule whereby there is no overtime anymore, and ties will be decided by judges who determine which team has the best uniform...

Well, though the Candian pair skated flawlessly and the Russian pair had a fall, I was impressed with the remaining part of the Russians program. They did some great moves and overall they seemed to have a superior program. Though it was close, I think the decision was the correct one, however I suspect that the controversy will probably overturn the decision in the long run.

BTW, I am Canadian.

How can you square the blame on the chinese judge? If you look at the score card they gave the Russians and the Canadians identical net technical+artistry scores. Why don't you blame the American judge for not giving them a 6.0? Singling out a judge that gave identical scores is nonsense.

I didn't single him out. It should be the Chinese and Polish judges who are singled out. They both tied the Russians and Canadians. As I said above, by tying them, they aren't doing their jobs.

Now, it is most likely that other judges were corrupt, and voted for team x for their own reasons. That is something completely different however, and should be dealt with as such.

It's not the judges job to have a unique score. They are to give the score they thought was deserved, if they all give the same score I suppose they all thought it was deserved.

Bah I'm still super pissed, the Canadians were flawless how can they get the silver?

Who'd know a Ferengi is so passionate about figure skating, of all things!

Perhaps in a situation where they were judging what would obviously be performances on different ends of the scale. However, these judges knew that the Russians and Canadians were competing for the same spot. In a situation were it is possible that their mark will be the determining factor in wether or not team x wins gold, they have to make a decision.

The Russians went first, if they thought that the Russians gave a better performance, mark the Canadians lower than the Russians. It is as simple as that.

I totally agree the Canadains should have won but I wasn't really surprised this is the third olimpics in a row that the same thing happened in figure skating. One of the years it was he womens singles not sure on the other but its tradition that unless the so-called champions fall mistakes will be overlooked. They really need to do something about how the scoring is done.
