Fighting fraud: a good program

This is a type of program I like to see - the enforcement against fraud.

I think we see it too little - it's outrageous how the wealthy scam an estimated $175 in taxes annual in tax evasion, for one example of many.

Neither party does enough - though the small amount I do see seems to come more from Democrats, unless it's against the poor.

But this one seems bi-partisan, with all sides agreeing it's a good idea, just asking 'why hasn't it happened earlier'.

60 Minutes did a story weeks ago on the large fraud by some in Medicare. It seemed an effort like this could do a lot to reduce the theft.

obamacare's latest revision (after the health summit) inlcuded some small ideas from the Republican plan. One of these ideas was for better investigations into medicare fraud such as background checks on billing agencies and individuals involved in billing. Also included are ways to prevent illegal distributions of billing privileges.

Don't be such a tool all the time and people are here would take you more seriously.

Republicans do deserve credit, as I said, for pushing *this* issue.

Now, it might be simply because the 'party of no' label starts to hurt, and they need to be for *something* and being 'against waste' is the safest thing in politics.

But I give them a little more credit and think they do support the right thing on this - unforutnately it's an exception to their willfull disregard of waste in 'friendly' programs.

Like any other plan it needs to be applied with wisdom. Too often inspectors use the letter of the law in order to collect fines. At times policies harm those they were intended to help.

Clearly out and out fraud needs to end, both on the part of providers AND patients, however nitpicking over not writing the time on a prescription phoned in constituting "fraud" because of some obscure reg buried in thousands of pages is hardly fair either.

There needs to be discernment so we have purposeful fraud reigned in without launching a witch hunt to replenish the coffers.

It all comes down to details, and in principle I think it's a good idea.
