Background: went to school today, parked at this spot close to the fire hydrant but the curb was *not* painted. I parked about 2 ft away from it (linear distance from the side walk) and I got a ticket for 110 bucks. 🙁

You can try, but in general all university parking departments are evil and will screw you at every opportunity. 😉

It was the city of chico.
I mean, I'm a law abiding student that doesn't do anything illegal and somehow the city just finds ways to screw students universally. Recently they doubled the parking meter's rate and it now feels somewhat like san francisco.
Chico cops don't really do anything but bust parties, either.

Isn't that all people in Chico do?

I would say you are screwed. California vehicle code Section 22514 states:
"22514. No person shall stop, park, or leave standing any vehicle within 15 feet of a fire hydrant except as follows:
(a) If the vehicle is attended by a licensed driver who is seated in the front seat and who can immediately move such vehicle in case of necessity.
(b) If the local authority adopts an ordinance or resolution reducing that distance. If the distance is less than 10 feet total length when measured along the curb or edge of the street, the distance shall be indicated by signs or markings.
(c) If the vehicle is owned or operated by a fire department and is clearly marked as a fire department vehicle.
Amended Ch. 488, Stats. 1987. Effective January 1, 1988."

see that's the thing. if part of the city has hydrants that have painted curbs shorter than 15ft aren't they sending a mixed message to the motorists?

yes, but if those painted curbs are more than 2 feet, you still broke the law. if there is no paint, you are best off assuming 15 feet.
don't get me wrong, it's a crap ticket. firemen can get in there with the hose with that much space. but when it comes to letting you off, i just don't see how it's gonna work.

I dunno. Comes down to common sense. See a hydrant? Don't park near it.

That would have been cool if they smashed out your windows to pull the fire hose through.

that is 110 dollars that i won't be spending on the chico economy. no more dining out, no more buying stuff from merchants so that i can recover from that 110 bucks.
