When my dad was a fighter pilot and we lived near bases I loved the sound of jets flying over. Just like someone said earlier, it's the sound of freedom.

Was gonna try and become a fighter pilot when I was younger. Applied to the Air Force Academy and got my representative from the house to nominate me but I got denied because my grades weren't good enough :-(. If only I had studied a little harder I wouldn't be the computer geek that I am today.

it's actually illegal to take pics of the air force bases activity (not that they could enforce)

Actually I don't believe that's the case. It's normally illegal to take pictures of the flightline from INSIDE a base without the authorization of the Installation Commander, but there's no prohibition on taking pictures from outside the fence.

hmm I wonder if I had permission to take my pics of an armed and loaded F16 on the flightline at March ARB... they specifically didn't allow shots of the inside of the cockpit but no one said anything about taking pics of the exteriors.

At Dobbins Air Force Base (marietta ga) we tried to go into the base 😱 and obviously they wouldnt let us, but we told them we wanted pictures, and they said we couldnt and if they saw us off base taking pics they would call the cops :Q this from some guys dressed in camo carrying big guns

they probably just didnt like us lol

Jet Noise - sound of Freedom.

Freedom? I live in Canada, we have probably 2 dozen fighter jets tops, and we're just as free.

You can thank your big buddies to the south for that.

Actually, our big buddies to the south have probably caused us more international grief then we'd like. i.e. guilty by association.

Why it might not be illegal (not sure of the law after 9/11), you will be stopped and questioned, possibly after someone runs your plate, if you are seen doing so. Trust me on this. Best advice is to NOT do it, or to ask permission first.

you have to be an official photographer to photograph anything if you are physically on the base. flightline is very secured and you have to have a special clearence. i work in the photo lab of Offutt AFB so i would know

You see many F18 Hornets / Super Hornets flying around the reserve base ( i think ) in fort worth. its pretty cool to see them fly so low ( seems like ~500-1000 ft ) but really goddamn loud. i wonder if the businesses are compensated for that like mervyns/sports authority/ridgmar mall? the F16/22 lockheed plant is here too but i really dont see many F16s around. i really should take a picture of the low flying planes ( should be ok - its on mall property or public roads )

I'm counting the number of times you have needed an air force/military due to the US' actions.

I'm coming up blank, perhaps my history is a bit fuzzy.

How so, he said "our big buddies to the south have probably caused us more international grief then we'd like." in response to 'not needing airforce and still free'.

That doesn't make sense. If the US has caused *MORE* gried then they'd like I want to know what "grief" has been caused. Also, if we cause that much grief, surely they would need to protect themselves, yet they have relativly little military.

I'm saying Canada has recieved less grief with us here, than without. I think the fact they haven't needed any kind of "real" national defense because we boarder them is the proof in the pudding.

If we weren't here, they'd need some sort of armed forces. Their lack of armed forces shows their general acceptance of our intentions (we ain't invading them). Even Sweden has armed forces...

Back in the early 90's, I used to go just north of Ft Worth in the evenings after work and watch the Bufs coming in low across the lake on approach to Carswell. Gear was down at that point and they just seemed to be floating as they were letting down in the pattern.

They looked much more graceful up there than on the flightlines.

At least the Air Force (or Army or Marine Corps) hasn't handed incredibly sensitive intelligence gathering technology to our adversaries in Asia, delivering it to their airport -- twice in fact, if you want to consider the Pueblo though that's a different case. If that's where the "laid back" attitude gets us, thank God for security.

Let's make it easy for those trying to collect against us. That's brilliant!

Did you get to see the show? I saw the thunderbirds practicing as I sat in bumper to bumper traffic friday evening on the way to Portland, but I had to work up north Saturday and missed it again🙁

1) Get a 4 foot piece of drain tube (about 5 inch diameter), stand near the begining of the runway, rest it on your shoulder and point it at the aircraft as they land.

2) Tell us what happens (with pics/video)

3) Profit...
