It looks like the concealed carry law in Ohio is already paying dividends.

Man with concealed-carry permit shoots gunman

By Kelli Wynn

Dayton Daily News

DAYTON | Two men carrying guns approached a 40-year-old man at Riverview Avenue and Catalpa Drive early Friday. Their victim bent over with outstretched hands.

Then things changed swiftly.

The targeted man pulled out a Glock 23 handgun ? he has a concealed-carry permit ? and fired several shots, hitting one of the gunmen, police said.

Police were dispatched to the 2000 block of West Riverview at about 12:45 a.m. on numerous calls about a shooting.

Police found the 40-year-old male victim at his Dayton residence. He told them that he was walking west on Riverview when he was approached by two males in dark clothing coming from Catalpa. One shoved the victim, the victim turned around and both men in dark clothes flashed handguns, police said.

The victim then "began to back away in a bent-over position with his hands outstretched," according to a police report. Then he pulled out a Glock 23, a .40-caliber handgun, striking one gunman several times, police said.

The two ran off, but police said they caught up with possible suspects at Good Samaritan Hospital.

The victim has both a Dayton Firearms Owner's Identification Card and Montgomery County Concealed Carry Card, police said.

Yay for him.

Maybe after a few more of these incidents are publicized, the average street thug will think twice about sticking up the average docile looking fellow in a collared shirt and non-baggy pants.

Cool.

(Anyone have any data that shows the number of saved innocent lives from this kind of situation and the number of lives lost to gun accidents and such.)

 😎

Question, this Law obviously was brought about and went into effect before the State was overrun by the Religious Republicans. Now that the State is Red is this Law that is obviously already working well in danger of being repealed by the Religious Right???

The religious right is a fan of guns generally and anti-gun control, so what are you worried about?

I think the victim was lucky. 2 on 1 with one gun each. I guess the surprise was enough to run them off, but things could of easily turned out a lot worse for him. I think I'd still rather just give them whatever they wanted, instead of pulling a John Wayne.

Yep, he could have easily gotten killed.

Yeah because instead of living without the X dollars that they stole, you would be dead because the "street thugs" will just shoot you in the head and then take your money. MUCH BETTER.....

I think you've been drinking too much of your own Kool Aid. Your post made no sense, and it almost sounded like someone making a parody of what you usually post.

As far I can tell, the government here in Ohio has been dominated by Republicans for quite some time. They are not, however, particularly conservative Republicans, which is why this law was enacted only recently after very heavy pressuring and lobbying from conservative groups.

I actually can't recall whether or not Bob Taft, the moderate-to-liberal Republican governor of Ohio supported it or not. My guess is that if he did, it was only in response to considereable pressure, because he was against it for quite some time.

Good point.

No he wasn't, he understood that if they planed to shoot they would have, He planned to shoot and he did. Point and shoot will take out point and threaten every time.

Either that, or often times people are mugged and then shot, so that the victim can't identify the perps in case they are later caught.

It's a double edged sword. Yes they save lives, and yes they take them. It's another problem without a solution. One answer is too weak, and the other too strong.

This sounds like less of a mugging case and more of an intimidation case. The one guy shoved the victim, then when he turned around they flashed guns? Is that it? The reason I'm curious is because it sounds the scenario escalated unnecessarily. I'm not necessarily against carry laws, however my fear is that minor encounters will turn into shoot outs in the street.

The American Rifleman used to carry a monthly column that had short stories of instances of gun owners protecting themselves and others. It was quite enlightening.

I remember one story about a group of duck hunters who shot a buck that was caught between the medians of a busy freeway. An old couple stopped to shoe it off the highway and the buck gored the old guy. Another vehicle stopped to help and one of them got gored. Luckily the duck hunters came by and shot the "poor, defenseless" deer.

So they were just "flashing" to show off how big their guns were and their push was for what reason?

Anytime somebody goes out of his way to show that he has a concealed weapon, you can bet they have something up their sleave and if they're also pushing you around???? It sounds to me like there are two more people off the street that should be off the street. That guy is my idea of a hero.

Well obviously something was going on, however neither of us were there so it's going to be impossible to do anything but speculate. I guess what I'm really questioning here was whether the victim's life was in danger or whether he was bumped by some punks who then flashed their guns as if to deter him from making anything more of it.

I don't see the wisdom of opening fire unless your life is in danger. I don't get a good sense of that from this story.

If someone pulls a gun on you then your life is in danger..

I'd say his ass would hurt real bad. Seriously, are we going to speculate about hypotheticals? I'm not necessarily arguing anything here, I'm merely pointing out the obvious -- that the more people carrying guns, the higher the chances that ordinary incidents will turn into a gun fight.

The story reads "flash" not "pulled" a gun. Semantics? I don't know. I could imagine someone with a 9 stuffed down the front of his pants could pull his shirt/jacket aside to "flash" you his gun. No pulling required.

I didn't mean to be so harsh.. but you made me think of those people who defend the burglar who got shot and then decide that the man protecting his home was the true criminal 😕
