LOL Covid-19 has nothing to do with this. Yes it's still a thing, but the world has moved on. If anyone still cared about "contagion," they would have masked up during the ceremony. I noticed a few attendees at the recent Tour de France did wear masks, which you basically never still see at U.S. sporting events from players, any staff or fans.

Anyway, the Spanish soccer federation has decided on a scorched earth approach to this scandal. If they really wanted to dig in and say Rubiales isn't resigning, they could have slapped him on the wrist and announced he'll be attending sensitivity training. Instead, they're all but declaring war on the players.

Note that on Monday, Rubiales was quoted as saying he made a mistake. IF the kiss was mutually consensual, why would he have ever admitted that?

The Athletic has a pretty good piece on what happened, and it's kind of bonkers compared to just an unwanted kiss. If you have an NYT account, you can read the article by visiting the NYT home page. NYT now owns The Athletic, and a few articles are freely accessible without subscription. I'll provide the URL below, but you may run into the paywall:

That's bullshit.

You know how this is going to turn out. The players are going to stick together and the Spain Federation is going to toss this guy under the bus because that's exactly what he has coming.

Spain international and Real Betis striker Borja Iglesias said he would not play for the national team “until things change,” while Spain’s acting second deputy prime minister, Yolanda Díaz, called for Rubiales to “resign now.”

“Mr. Rubiales still has no idea where he is or what he’s done,” wrote Díaz on X, previously known as Twitter. “He’s not up to it. He needs to resign now and save us the embarrassment,” she added.

Really? This is a story about sports, not about Covid-19. You're entitled to your opinion, even though it's completely wrong here. Look at this forum's Covid-19 thread, which blew up for over two years. I haven't checked lately, but it went silent for about 5 months. I even conceded that Covid-19 is still around, but the fact remains most people stopped caring about it a long time ago.

Watch any sports event on TV and tell me how many spectators are wearing masks. It's no different in society at large, even in your Bay Area (which is probably the most masked area in the country). This is not commentary on how things should be (transmission has been increasing recently and flu season is coming soon), but how things are in reality. In the various articles I've read about Rubiales' boorish behavior, not a single writer has mentioned Covid risk. And that's all I'll say about Covid in this thread.

Based on The Athletic's reporting, Rubiales is indeed playing a losing hand but that's not the whole story. The big news is that Spanish soccer is forcefully backing him despite condemnation and controversy. I don't care how drunk he was, obviously he was way over the line and it's shocking that the federation is targeting the players over it.

Watching it live (I did, tuning in at 3AM PDT), I was shocked at his behavior.

Another round of covid boosters is going to be evaluated for approval on Sept. 12, it's said. They aren't doing this just for the fun of it. Lots of people can ignore it but everybody's at risk. Some a lot more than others. Long covid is still a thing and the consequences can be devastating for life. You can even get LC if you are asymptomatic for Covid-19.

The Non-Political Covid-19 thread here has been posted to in the last week, by me and others.

Since you seem to have access to New York Times articles, here's a recent one on Covid boosters:

The comments, as usual, are more interesting than the article.
