Field goals/Extra points: NFL might shorten the distance between the goal posts

They could make the uprights the entire length of the end zone and when the Vikings needed it, Walsh would still miss.

Maybe the NBA should raise the rim to 12 feet while major league sports are changing the rules to make the games more exciting - it's too easy with today's caliber of player to dunk the ball.

Hey, since so few teams ever go for the 2 point conversion, except late 3rd quarter into the 4th if it meant one fewer possession necessary to catch up and tie or win the game, maybe they could make it a 3 point conversion?

I agree with this

Make em shoot it

leave the game alone

i agree with this in regards to the extra point stuff. i am a fan of the fact that the PAT is basically guaranteed if you only want 1 point, it makes for a lot of interesting scenarios late in the games when the score is tight. i really don't want everyone to just go for 2 points all the time.

I think the NBA needs height restrictions for players currently on the court. Require one of each:
1) Player 5'10" or less
1) Player 6'0" or less
1) Player 6'6" or less
1) Player 6'8" or less
1) Unlimited height

Not these heights exactly, but something like it. Or maybe use a total height maximum.

Goal posts should be changed to a circular target that lights up with a sponsor's logo when hit by the ball.

Make it variable sized so the kicker can call for a smaller target worth more points!

Kick as normal for 1 point, run it in for 2, or kick it blind for 3. How many takers do you think will try it? Wouldn't it be interesting if teams had to try all three at least once per game?

Did anyone read how they are going to determine if this will be put into place?
They are micro-chipping the the balls to see how close each kick comes to the uprights, then they will have actual data points to base their decision off of...

However, as I'm sure most people would agree, a MUCH better use for this technology (which is nothing earth shattering) would be to chip the balls to determine if a ball has cross the goal line or where the ball should be downed instead of allowing some arbitrary placement by the refs. How stupid.

its called keeping their jobs.

why else are there still umpires behind home plate to call balls/strikes when a computer can do it better?

The article brought up using the chip to locate ball position on the field as a possibility. It's not very reliable now/yet.

For gathering field goal data it seems kinda dumb. A camera could be set up that provides the same information.

I think the should plant trees on the football field, like the field we use play pick games on, timed pass around the spruce tree was really cool.

leave the game alone

They said that in 1905.

“Because of these rules and the fact coaches at that time thought the forward pass was a sissified type of play that wasn’t really football, they were hesitant to adopt this new strategy,”

It's not really an option today either. Athletes, pharmacology, and medicine continue to advance to where today's worst football player that barely makes an NFL team today is likely far superior than most players of the golden era. His parents, high school coaches, college programs have all been grooming him for the pros ever since they saw him juke his first defender in peewee league. Nutritionists, weight coaches, education, etc at very young ages. Look at the Gronks. That shit ain't natural. Just like in the digital domain, the rules must catch up.

And then there are the changing safety concerns. Our whole society is PC now, the NFL has to conform. ESPN Hits of the Week is a thing of the past.

I understand changes that are made to ensure player safety (although I really wish we could have our kickoffs back), but stuff like this seems to be arbitrary.

They can "fix" soccer and hockey by getting rid of offsides. Cherrypicking should allowed. If a team is will to give up defense for offense more power to them.

I played for 14 years. But I would totally be for this rule. Maybe make it so they can go up to the 18 yard box without offsides then keep the existing rules for inside the 18 yard box. At least give a bit of assistance to the other team.

I also wouldn't mind increasing the goal by 1-2 feet.

Soccer should make the goal wider maybe fewer 0-0 games
Oh sure. But, in baseball, pitching a no-hitter is considered a perfect game. A perfect perfect game in baseball would go on forever, with no one ever getting a hit off of either pitcher.
