fiber optic ADSL sharing

Hi, I am currently using cable modem and a Linksys Cable modem/DSL router to share the connection.

I may need to switch to ADSL, and BellSouth told me since my phone line was fiber optic all the way, instead of having a DSL modem, they will install an RJ-45 ethernet outlet directly in my wall and a standard NIC in my PC.

My question is, what equipment do I need to have to share this connection? (I really don't want to use software sharing) Will my old cable modem/DSL router still work, even in the absence of a conventional DSL modem?

I did some research, and it seems the protocol is called IFITL, even though BellSouth didn't tell me this.

So my original question probably becomes: will a Linksys 4-port cable modem/DSL router work with BellSouth IFITL?

Why go all that way, if Bell is going to but a RJ-45 jack in your wall all you will need is a crossover cable from the jack to your router. No worries, they will "piggy-back" IP over the fiber to the distribution center from where your
RJ-45 jack will be connected to.
 
So I assume you're saying IFITL does work with the Linksys DSL router? (I'm not interesting in how IP packets work from BellSouth to my house.)

I do believe that IFITL uses PPPoE. I have a friend that got it sometime last year and that's what I remember him telling me. The Linksys router is able to handle PPPoE, again, never used it myself, so I can't say how well it works.
 
Yes, the Linksys router, or any IP router for that matter, will work with IFITL. It's all TCP/IP, only the physical transport layer varies. And I don't think you'll need a crossover cable from the RJ-45 to your router, a straight CAT5 cable will work fine.

BTW, anyone out there have BellSouth IFITL? Is it fast and reliable? The sales rep I talked with on the phone said it was superior to cable modem and conventional ADSL. 🙂
 
Just curious...can you shine a flash light on the fiber optic cable coming to your house and freak out their servers? 😉
 
I don't know. Maybe it's possible. 🙂

BTW, for IFITL, there seems to be no fiber coming in my house. The fiber/copper line will terminate on an outside switch or something, and a standard Cat-5 Ethernet cable runs from there into my home.
 
So bell told you, you have fiber optic cable to your home for your phone?
That does not sound right, could you please explane this for me.

Yes you can shine a flashligh in fiber and it will go to the other end.
But as soon as you talke the fiber off the bulk head they will know something is up
