Fiber One Bars = flatulence

I have been eating these bars in the morning and after lunch I noticed flatulence. This did not happen the first time but after a few months I was getting a lot of gas in the afternoons. I thought my lunch diet was to blame. Recently I stopped eating the fiber bars and guess what no flatulence.

Anyone else get gas from these bars? Is it the preservatives?

Tons of gas. One bar in the morning is enough to have me farting all day.

One time I made the mistake of eating two bars in a day. That night I woke up a few times with sharp, stabbing pain in my abdomen. It went away eventually but it sucked.

lol

it's the fiber

If you are getting enough fiber in your day (i.e. your shit is normal and like clockwork), you don't need excess fiber. Excess fiber, and a few of the sugar alcohols (which are carbohydrates that aren't digestible/don't count as calories for humans, like fiber), cause gas. Everyone knows this?

Your body eventually gets used to it. I started taking fiber pills each night on the advice of a doctor. For a month I farted all the time but it eventually stopped. Ever since I've been able to set my clock on a morning dump.

I tried one the day before a race to "clean me out". It didn't do that at all and instead just gave me gas that evening and durning the run. Never again.

Those sugar alcohols also lead to leaky shit ass. There was a warning on one of the fiber bars I had "Warning - product may cause leaky bowel discharge".

I threw them away. I don't want to gamble and lose.

Any kind of high fiber grain gives me the farts. Curiously, I don't get them from beans, even though they're notorious for it.

Yeah, I was very sensitive to those damn things as well. It also made my stool into a soft ice cream coming out of a machine - like consistency.

I love these bars and one a day keeps my colon's contents free flowing and on schedule. If you overdue it, you will have many G&L farts. You won't feel comfortable farting unless you are seated on a toilet.

Drink more water. As in a full glass whenever you eat anything with concentrated fiber. Helps keep the bacteria that produce said gas in line.

Funny cause Bush Baked Beans now touts the fiber content on the can. Is that why beans have been synonymous with farting?

thread o' the day

I certainly did not expect everyone else to agree with me.

I did find this interesting article

Fiber is defined as material made by plants that is not digested by the human gastrointestinal tract. Fiber is one of the mainstays in the treatment of constipation though it also may have additional uses such as the treatment of diverticular disease of the colon. Many types of fiber bind to water and keep the water within the intestine. The fiber and water adds bulk (volume) to the stool, and the water softens the stool. Increased gas (flatulence) is a common side effect of high-fiber diets. The gas occurs because bacteria within the colon, unlike the intestine of humans, are capable of digesting fiber to a small extent. The bacteria produce gas as a by-product of their digestion of fiber.

There are different sources of fiber, and the type of fiber varies from source to source. Some types of fiber are digested to a greater extent by colonic bacteria than other types of fiber. The better-digested fiber produces more gas.

All fibers, no matter their source, can cause flatulence; however, since bacteria vary in their ability to digest different types of fiber, different sources of fiber may produce different amounts of gas. To complicate the situation, the ability of bacteria to digest one type of fiber can vary from individual to individual. This makes the selection of the best type of fiber for each individual (i.e., a fiber that improves the quality of the stool without causing flatulence) more difficult. The choice becomes a matter of trial and error.

I'm not sure how much good fiber that LIFE cereal has, but this is a funny story nonetheless. One of my old roommates use to eat a bowl or two at around midnight for awhile. Each time he did it, he'd be sitting at work the next morning in a meeting, and get terrible sharp pains in his abdomen. Since he knew the result would be a mega-dump, he'd have to run out of the meeting and to the bathroom before he exploded in his pants.

I use to like LIFE cereal every once in awhile when I was a kid and I didn't remember this happening...though I would eat it at more normal times like the morning. So, I tried it one day, but I ate the cereal for dinner. Sure enough, 1-2 am rolled around, I woke up with sharp pains in my stomach and had to dump it out.

Moral of the story, kids, is if you want to clean yourself out, eat LIFE cereal. 😛

I hope the suite was one of those deals you get at Burlington coat factory. That must really suck walking out of work with that stuff going down your leg.

Fixed that for you.

Same here. I don't eat them any more.

LOL...I've been eating up these fiber one yogurts my wife didn't like and been having nasty smelling farts all week. My farts are usually occasional, loud and hilarious. Lately they've been frequent, loud and tragically foul. Mystery solved.

Yep, the Fiber One bars are colloquially known as Fart Bars. I used to eat them all the time for a mid-morning snack at work and the gas would come a couple hours later like clockwork. Fortunately I had a large office, lots of air volume for dispersion. 🙂

Don't you hate it when some one steps in right after you let one bad enough to end a marriage? I have to put on my Brawny towel "so-so sorry" face.
