Fiber Home Network, Help me set this up

Hello all,

I just picked up some used 1gb Fiber toys.
16port fiber switch Brocade 2800
8 port fiber hub emulex Lightpulse LH800
2ea SC fiber cards 64bit/66 QLA2200f
2ea LC Fiber cards 64/66 LP9002

I want to setup my server and 2 other PC to use fiber between them (Transfering large files, backups, Music, and FTP)

2 of the systems are running Win2k3 server and one is running Winxp.
All have 64bit slots and more than enought CPU power

System 1--- Supoermicro X5DL8-GG mobo, Dual 2.0/512/533 Xeons, 4.5GB ram, 160gb U320 raid 5, LSI 320-1

System 2---- NCCH-DL, Dual 2.8/2m/800 irwindales, 2gb ram, 320gb Sata II raid 0,

System 3---- Iwill DH800, 2ea 1.6lv's @ 3.0/512/800, 1gb ram, 320gb Sata II Raid 0

System 4---- BFG NF4U, X2 3800, 1gb ram, 320gb Sata II raid 0

Raid Array-- Nexsan ATABY2f, 6ea 250gb maxtors Raid5 1.2tb, 8ea 200gb Maxtors raid5 1.2tb with 2ea 2gb fiber ports.

The Raid Array is hooked straight to system #1 right now via the LP9002 controller

I want to connect all four of these systems together on one network for transfers and stuff, I would still like to use there GB connections for internet use, but if someone has a better idea let me know. I know fibre is expensive, but the fiber setup I have didnt cost me hardly anything so I want to play around

fist, fix your title as there is a big difference between fiber and fibre. if you have only 4 system, why did you get a 16 port switch and an 8port hub? don't use the hub but rather the switch. connect them each to the switch. since you don't have a router, connect one of the systems to the internet and then bridge the connections which should give all the computers access to the net.

First off Fibre and Fiber have the same definition in the dictionary. Spelling can be different in different places.

And I got a deal on the Switch and Hub (had to buy them together)

In my post I said I would like to make 1 main Intranet, but still have the ability to hook each of the PC's to the internet seperatly. I do have a router and a small network already setup.

Mytime, there is a big difference between Fiber and Fibre.

Fiber is the physical cable, Fibre is only for Fibre Channel and is only applied to SANs.

I was very confused by your post because you said "fiber" and then started talking like it was SAN gear.

I am new to the whole fiber/Fibre stuff.

Right now I do have a Fibre San--- main PC and the raid array.

Since I dont know anything more than my single hookup I wanted to know what my options were.

my main thing I want to do is to be able to trasfer large files between PC's and the raid array. I did not know if I could use the switch with GBIC copper and make a network or would I have to use the switch as a SAN Switch.

Forgive the ignorance, I am trying to learn on my own and need some sort of guidance.

Fiber and Fibre are not the same. Fiber is used for defining networking, such as what you're doing. Fibre is used to define Fibre channel, which is ways to store data, such as SAN, and can use Fiber or twisted pair cabling. Fibre is often compared w/ iSCSI setups.

1. Hook the stuff up to the switch.
2. If possible, hook the switch up to the router. If this is not possible, use a PC to share the internet connection from the router to the switch.
