The way I'm reading the article, it seems that:

1. Fiat is planning to float Ferrari. Not to sell to GM, but to sell shares of Ferrari to stock-market in general
2. Sometime down the road, Fiat Auto may be sold to GM entirely.

Now, if I remember correctly, the ownership-structure of Fiat/Ferrari goes something like this. The parent company of Fiat owns alot of companies (they make trains among other thing). That parent-company also owns Ferrari. Fiat Auto is one of those subsidiaries. Fiat Auto owns the other brands (Lancia, Alfa Romeo and maybe Maserati), but not Ferrari. Ferrari is owned directly by the parent-company. If Fiat Auto is sold to to GM, it would NOT mean that GM also get's Ferrari. because Fiat Auto does not own Ferrari, the parent-company does.

EDIT: Can't speel

The article mentions that Fiat owns 90% Ferrari Maserati Sport . In fact, there were rumors of Fiat going IPO with Ferrari, but I guess this lastest news pretty much kills that.

Here is some additional info on the structure of Fiat Auto. It mentions Fiat, Lancia and Alfa Romeo. Nowhere is Ferrari mentioned. Fiat Auto does not own Ferrari. If Fiat Auto is sold to GM, it would NOT include Ferrari.

The Fiat Group's automotive operations are managed primarily through Fiat Auto Holdings B.V., which controls the Group's automobile and light commercial vehicles sectors, with the exception of Ferrari and Maserati.

I hope this clears things up a bit.

Fiat Auto does not own Ferrari.

No, but FIAT does..............

June 1, 2001

Italy's Fiat SpA said it acquired an additional three percent stake held in Ferrari from the Prudentia Fund, a bank investment group, for $12.9 million, Reuters reports.

Fiat now holds 90 percent of Ferrari, with the remaining 10 percent in the hands of the Ferrari family.

Link here.

Although Fiat will retain control of Ferrari after the listing, there are suggestions among experts that the parent company may be forced to sell Fiat Auto

They might sell Fiat Auto, a subsidiary of Fiat Group. Fiat Auto consists of Fiat, Alfra Romeo and Lancia. Ferrari and Maserati are NOT part of Fiat Auto, they are owned directly by the Fiat Group. If Fiat Auto is sold to GM, it would NOT include Ferrari and Maserati. Altrough they could sold 'em too to GM, but there are NO hints pointing to that direction. The plan is to float Ferrari in the stock-market and maybe sell Fiat Auto to GM. No-one is even remotely suggesting that they are selling Ferrari to GM.

Are we clear?

Oh, yes indeed, young pup. That's what was said in my post.... Fiat SpA owns Ferrari, the overall conglomerate of Fiat, whcih includes Fiat Auto.

Yeah, my post said that, but since GM only has a stake in Fiat auto, then Ferrari is in no danger of being bought by GM.

Yep, GM already owns 20% of Fiat Auto (and Fiat in turn owns something like 5% of GM)

1. GM already own Ferrari kind of because they are one of the biggest (or THE biggest?) share holder of Fiat ...
2. Maybe GM will teach those sleazy italians what fair play in sports means (eg Formula 1 Austria Grand Prix ... do I need to say more?)
3. Maybe Ferrari will finally build a car where you don't need to take a technician along for the ride (their reliability SUCKS big time)?
4. Hopefully Formula 1 will now become as popular in the US as it is in Europe?

:D

*sigh*.... Read the thread. GM has ZERO ownership in Ferrari. GM owns 20% of Fiat Auto, but Fiat Auto does not own Ferrari, the parent-company does.

What a tragedy that a great company like GM might own ferrari and the corvette. Truthfully rather have the vette there a lot more reliable and better for day to day sports car fanatic.

Also how many of you could actually buy a ferrari ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

But as for the original post, what's wrong with GM? How is Fiat any better than GM? I have an Oldsmobile and its a great car! Can't say the same for the POS Fiats I've experienced.

Can someone help me out here? What is the big tragedy? The same guys will be building the cars, the money will go elsewhere. Big deal. Who cares where the money goes? Look what happened when Ford bought Jaguar. That was also hailed as a tragic event, yet all Ford did was rewire the cars, so that the infamous Jaguar electrical problems were no more. How was that so tragic?
