FFXII: Active or Wait Mode for battles?

I really hate the battle system. I'm a control freak and I love controlling everyone in my party and just waiting for action bars to fill up.

I played FF IV, VI, and VII before I played XII. I skipped all others because a) I wasn't interested and b) I didn't own the consoles.

First time I played XII, I was like "WTF, this sucks, no victory music! Heretic! Heathen!" and almost burned the game at a stake. But I gave it a chance and it's pretty good, although I still miss the "turn system" despite it's age.

I played it on wait mode...Seriously, think about it. In real life, if you decide, "Oh, I'm going to cast fire", you wouldn't have to stop and scroll through your mind to select the spell. You just cast it. Wait mode is like that...it lets you do what you want, when you want, because the game pauses while you have to select what you want.

Then again, I played the Japanese version of the game (picked it up when I went to Japan). I knew enough Japanese (with a translation for story lines) to work my way through the menus and such, but it did slow me down. Wait mode helped.

Next time you're getting bashed by a bear, wait a few seconds as it attacks so that you can scroll through your menus to pick your "run away" command.

Active mode is too frustrating. "Hold on Sephiroth...let me get to my Cure 3 spell so I don't die." He won't listen, because you're letting him have an unfair advantage.

I know he has nothing to do with FFXII.

Dacalo: Why not sing the victory music after each battle? Now that I think about it, I should sing it all the time...like, after I poop!

I need to go to bed now.

I noticed you didn't list FFXI, if you did, you would know where the gambit system came from on XII.

The battle system in XII is probably the best from all of the FF's, in my opinion. Its simply real time, and having gambits is the best thing to having a squad of players at your disposal. You have full control, you tell them what and under what conditions.

Anyways, the first time I played XII, I thought of how my online play was with my group in XI. It perfectly simulates it in a way that you'll have to play XI to understand. It feels as if you are actually playing with other people. I think that was the approach they wanted for XII.

Just some thoughts.

danny~!

I played Wait Mode with Gambits turned off for the leader (though I turned it on near the end of the game when I was just grinding).

If I play again (I want to!), I'll play Active Mode. But I'm too much of a wimp to do that through the first run.

Yeah I thought the point was to use the gambit system? I hated the gambit system at first, but once I figured out how to use it to my advantage I loved it. Although it did make battles a lot easier, but then again less time consuming then cut scenes and turn based. Also I still love the battle system in 7. One can only imagine what 13 has in store.

I hate that I have to wait about 20 seconds just to freakin post something on this crappy site. I remember when it used to be fast.

Anyway, I always use Active because it's more challenging, and more realistic. I don't think using the Wait thing is cheating though.

Get this, the page I'm typing on right now still isn't finished loading. One day I may just stop coming to Anandtech altogether. I took over a minute to completely load.

QFT

After playing FFXI for so long, FFXII feels natural.

Once you get a bunch of different conditions, the gambit is great to use. You can usually just let the guys run wild and don't care about them. I love that.
