I played FF IV, VI, and VII before I played XII. I skipped all others because a) I wasn't interested and b) I didn't own the consoles.
First time I played XII, I was like "WTF, this sucks, no victory music! Heretic! Heathen!" and almost burned the game at a stake. But I gave it a chance and it's pretty good, although I still miss the "turn system" despite it's age.
I noticed you didn't list FFXI, if you did, you would know where the gambit system came from on XII.
The battle system in XII is probably the best from all of the FF's, in my opinion. Its simply real time, and having gambits is the best thing to having a squad of players at your disposal. You have full control, you tell them what and under what conditions.
Anyways, the first time I played XII, I thought of how my online play was with my group in XI. It perfectly simulates it in a way that you'll have to play XI to understand. It feels as if you are actually playing with other people. I think that was the approach they wanted for XII.
Just some thoughts.
