I suggest Lineage 2.

it's graphics blow anything else out of the water.

gaining experience, on the other hand, is rather dull.

it depends i guess on what you want to get out of a game. if you want pvp, with potential loss (in terms of XP and gear), then lineage 2 is a great game.

if you want to quest, xp in instanced rooms, then it isnt for you. (we call these kind of people carebears tho :p)

Lol, you never miss a chance to put down the genre. Meanwhile you spend more time doing so than MMOG players spend online... I'm sorry you couldn't control yourself during your stint in .. was it WoW? ... but it's no different from a fat person blaming McDonalds.

Why has no one mentioned Warhammer Online yet :|

I'm holding out for the new combat system in Vanguard, but slowly it seems to be shaping up into a flop of EQ2 proportions.

Well Sony is involved now, so... yeah :( I'm not even considering it anymore.

As a publisher only. They have no control over content. Yet. Even if they weren't involved, nothing new has been presented and my interest has waned.

Well I tried the DDO free trial, and even though I only played it for one day, I was seriously unimpressed as a fan of the franchise. I've re-installed Guild Wars until I find a true MMO that suits me.

I used to play Star Wars Galaxies and Sony ruined it, I have played EverQuest II and I hated it, I tried The Matrix Online and it was dire. There is a definite Sony Online Entertainment theme here, which is why I have lost interest in Vanguard: Saga Of Heroes, even if they are only publishing and maintaining servers (which they suck at, Chimaera server in Star Wars Galaxies was always breaking down and Bria had insane lag.)

I have never tried World Of Warcraft due to serious complaints about the community, but I am considering giving it a shot. I am also considering Final Fantasy XI as a friend plays it, but from what's been said in this thread I wouldn't enjoy it. I am also putting thought into City Of Heroes/Villains, but I am a PVE/raider by nature so I've been told that I wouldn't enjoy it.

WoW expansion closed beta started yesterday, and the NDA was lifeted so expect to see lots of info leaking out on it soon. I'm really liking what I'm seeing so far, it looks like Blizzard actually listened and has put lots of effort into fixing problems with the game.

Also they are not supporting EverQuest II anymore because it was a BIG FLOP and now they are going back to EverQuest I and remaking the entire game into a newer version of EverQuest I.

Can you please clarify this? Are they totally stopping development on EQ2?

FFXI was fun for a while, but the grind becomes absolutely ridiculous after level 35 or so. I'm talking stuff like, 12 hours on a single quest just so you can take a plane. Killing the same 5 creatures 4,000 times because they are the only ones that have a reasonable risk/reward ratio at your level that aren't over farmed. The whole equipment system was total crap when I was playing, although starting to improve just as I quit. People farm the named monsters constantly and then square has to reduce the drop rate so that if you actually want the item and don't want to farm the same enemy for 5 weeks, you are SOL.

Still, despite all that, it was quite a lot of fun for a while.

1. Don't plan on soloing, well maybe past the first 10 levels. It's impossible to solo freakin Evens!
2. Can speak Japanese
3. Expect to spend most of your time killing the same group of monsters over and over cause there is nothing else to do.
4. Plan on purchasing Gil, the market is so inflated now, non gil buying people can't afford crap off the AH
5. Have the same group of friends you play with who will always show up; if one of you get behind a couple levels your party won't get experience for crap.
6. Enjoy getting 100xp forever

My recommendation is check out Dark Age of Camelot. The RVR alone is worth it.

Not true at all I am currently a 71 Beastmaster and have solo'd the whole way. Depends what you are looking for, I have limited time as well. So I play when i want for as long as I have time. Now if you pick a different job then yes, soloing is hell and you most likely will need to level up in parties. Not that its a bad thing but it makes it hard if you have a pretty busy schedule.

Unless they changed it, you have to level to 30 (invariably involving lots of grouping) as some other class and complete a quest to even become a beastmaster.

My personal MMOcrack of choice is City of Villains. I <3 the character creator. Leveling can be slow, but when you get in on an 8 person team, it goes by in a breeze.

Do they ever have free trials for that game? I was bored last weekend and wanted to try it out but they required a purchase. I am done buy games I havent tried out before hand.

I got two free 14 day trials from when I bought it (one for COV and one for COH), but the box is at home, so I wouldn't be able to give you mine until Thanksgiving. I'll PM you if I find anything else out, I know there have been free trial weekends in the past.

EQ2 development is stopping? There's a new expansion pack coming out in a month.

I used to play WoW but the guild I was in fell apart so I moved to EQ2 which my wife played. I've actually found it decent, despite what a lot of people say about it. It does sound like it's changed quite a bit since launch, so maybe it was bad at first. I've had fun, FWIW.

I play FFXi, very good game. The storyline for the diffrent missions in the game are awesome. It does become time consuming though. So\me of the missions and quest can be very time consuming. Some of the itmes you need to drop from the mob can take forever.

don't bother. its garbage. its complete grinding. no story at all, all the quests and mobs are literally the same.

I played FFXI for a year and a half and enjoyed it very much up until I quit. I should not say I didnt enjoy it anymore but I did not have time for it anymore. It is very time consuming. And while I cant vouch for the gameplay now, when I quit, bots and gilfarmers were becoming a problem. I was forced to purchase gil to get the gear I needed because I didnt want to spend days on end farming it. As long as you have friends to play with, you will enjoy it very much. There is much to discover and experience. Dont let the fact that japanese players are on the same serviers disuade you, there is a communication barrier but more than you think can speak a little english and the majority of them are nice.
If I had the time I would pick it up again.

There is definitely a story. Arguably one more focused than WoW. Not sure how you can think there isn't. The game in general is less story-focused than WoW because all quests in WoW have a story behind them. In FFXI there is basically just the one main story that only relates to missions.

I've been playing the "Good Vs. Evil" (CoH+CoV) trial for a week now, and I ordered the real thing on Saturday and am anxiously awaiting its delivery tomorrow. My experience so far has been nothing like you described, of course I've only reached level eight as I've been testing different types of characters to see what I liked.

Claws/regeneration stalker FTW. :D
