FF7 now on mobile for iOS

The FF7 hype isn't deserved, but the hate isn't deserved either.

Anyways that Verge article is from Oct 2013...so they are pretty much right - it took a couple years for it come to fruition (Aug 2015).

I wasn't as interested in this port - The remake sounds exciting, and what is MORE exciting is perhaps a new rpg IP from Square Enix that isn't focused on 16 year old teenie boppers.

I changed the thread title to note that this is for iOS only right now.

For the few of you saying "wrong forum", I'm fine with it being in this forum. First, it's mobile news and we haven't split the group into "iOS goes to All Things Apple" - at least not yet. When we change the forum title to "Android Mobile Devices" then we can move iOS news to the Apple subgroup... for now, I think this is the right place for it. And secondly because it showing up on iOS is a sign that an Android port is likely coming. It's interesting news - regardless of your opinion of the FF series....

That's why I originally put it up in Off Topic, the least defined forum. On the surface, it may look like a small thing, a port of an old game onto a new platform. But I've already seen enough excitement about the news, more even than about the game itself, because it could well mark a milestone for mobile gaming. The way the game did for it's genre when it was released. You see plenty of cultural references to the game online, love it or hate it.

Once Nintendo starts releasing games for the mobile scene, maybe Anandtech should consider a "Mobile Gaming" to join the other gaming forums.

You do know they're not going to be releasing typical Nintendo games on there anytime soon right? They came right out and said they wouldn't do that basically to keep people having a reason to buy Nintendo's hardware. They partnered with a company that makes typical mobile games and are basically going to be using that model, just putting on a Nintendo flavoring to it. They even outright said their stuff will be "free to start" and that they both expect people to pay and pay more as they feel their brand is premium.

An alternative could be an interface between a Wii U GamePad and an iPad. This could make even more sense with an iPad Pro's larger screen.
However, this is probably a bridge too far for Nintendo at this point.

It's always a bit funny when people are shocked, shocked that a game arrives on iOS first. That's what happens with most mobile games! In fact, it's usually a surprise when a title lands on Android first.

(The short list of reasons why: narrower selection of hardware to test, better development tools, much less piracy.)

That's a horrible thing to reference and for one reason: $$$. Sega was launching a new console so obviously they're going to say that in '99. The problem was they didn't have money so they simply had no choice. Guess what will almost assuredly make money? Typical horrible mobile games with Nintendo branding. And Nintendo isn't exactly hurting right now either (and keep in mind they're not hurting even though the 3DS stumbled out of the gate and then the Wii U has been their biggest hardware failure since the Virtual Boy). I'd say there's a higher chance of Nintendo moving to mostly making those type of games than there is of them making typical Nintendo games on mobile platforms. Especially games like Pokemon and then tying in Amiibos. They've basically been transitioning in that direction for years.

I've been saying for years that Nintendo should come up with a plastic clamshell like the DS/3DS style controller that is actually a case for iPhones. They love doing that for their own hardware already, and this way they'd have a huge install base, they could sell it for less money (imagine someone going, I could buy a separate Nintendo handheld for $200, or I could buy a Nintendo controller case for my iPhone for $100, it'd be a no brainer, and there'd be more profit in that case, plus they wouldn't have to worry about all the hardware stuff that seems to cause them such grief).

The only way that happens though is if Apple buys or sets up some blockbuster deal with Nintendo. I think it'd be a great fit for both companies (and they could turn the iPod Touch into a hefty gaming device for those that can't or don't want to pony up for the iPhone), but Nintendo seems so set in doing their own thing. But then they're still making money so why shouldn't they? Maybe we'll see things change in the future, but it'll be years and years, and I also think if they do change it is going to be in a way that gamers don't like (meaning they transition to making their own mobile games).

But again, people expecting typical Nintendo type games on mobile any time soon (at least directly from Nintendo) are going to be disappointed. The NX won't be out until next year or possibly 2017 even, and then it'll almost certainly be a few years and it to be an unmitigated failure that makes the Wii U look like a rousing success for it to even be considered.

This is not an Android sub-forum. It's the mobile device forum. This post is appropriate for this forum because it's a game for a mobile device. Besides, it's not exactly crazy busy on here anyway.


There was a referendum of sorts 3-4 years ago where I had a poll asking if we should make this an Android forum and move all iOS stuff to All-things-apple and the decision was that we should keep it Android + iOS + WinMobile + Blackberry + etc. all in one forum because there were people with iPhones who don't own any other Apple product and there are people who switch back and forth and it's good to know what is happening on the other platform. I think both of these reasons continue to hold true today.

If people want to post iOS stuff in all-things-apple, that's fine and if they want to post iOS stuff here in Mobile Devices, that's fine too. We haven't split the forum yet and if we were to do so, we'd change the forum name.

So did anyone actually buy it? How is it on a phone?

I do have fond memories of playing it decades ago and again more recently on my PC when they released it again/updated(?) several years back.

I don't really have any desire to play it again on my phone, though if it was cheap (<$5) I might have picked it up for giggles. But $15 for a game this old and redone is a bit much.

Well, there are also categories for Windows and Unix-based platforms. The point is that it's okay to have both "deep dive" sections as well as generalist ones, and that there's a degree of acceptable overlap. FF7 is okay given that it's a game, and that it'll probably come to Android at some point; asking for help running scripts in OS X's Terminal would be too Apple-specific.
