Ladies and Gentlemen, this is a perfect example of the phenomenon of "bullshot," wherein a game developer cooks up a "screenshot" that is a billion times better than anything you will ever come close to seeing in the game.

except for the fact that this team has been hard at work on both the engine and the game coding itself.
the FFX team created the FFVII tech-demo shown at last year's E3, and it was a realtime demo. Immediately following that they began work on FFXIII, so I'd have to say that those visuals in the FFXIII screenshots will look nearly identical to the final release.

Realtime demo on a system that wasn't even close to ready yet? Weren't they using Macs or something of the sort?

BTW, White Knight > FFXIII 😉

okay, it wasn't realtime, it was rendered, but it was the engine they created that would work on the specs of the PS3, and I have read that the engine has stayed and is the playtime engine.
I've never seen Square release gameplay screenshots that were rendered more fancy than the realtime engine. So those shots may be fake in that the game isn't ready enough to show shots, but I believe that's the engine we will see.
some companies, I wouldn't trust that.. but it is indeed SquareEnix, and they are great with engines.

If you honestly think Sony will not be at the top once again, you're not a realist, but a pessimist. They have the greatest world wide market recognition, the apps and despite their albeit rediculous pricepoint, will sell millions whether a few consumers don't like it or not. Gamers will buy the PS3 just to play the new Tekkens, the new Gran Turismos, the new Final Fantasy games, the Devil May Cry games, the God of Wars, the SOCOMs and so on. The apps carry the console, and no one else has a stronger line up then sony, that's fact. Until Microsoft and Nintendo start getting the Tekkens, and Final Fantasy games up to the quality on Sony machines, things will stay virtually the same.

You are likely right this time around, but they will be losing market share. IMO, this may be their last generation on top. You could have made a similar argument for Nintendo before the N64, but all it took for them to lose their crown was Square leaving. The very same thing could happen to Sony at any time.

looks great. though how the FF games are going i wonder how much we will be able to play. is it going to be more fmv or gameplay?

looks good. the RPGs will be the major factor for me to decide what consoles to buy. I can play pretty much any other games on the PC
