DO NOT use oven cleaner on treated PCB like your motherbother! There's a reason a metal machine screw can fall on motherboard traces and not instantly royally fsck things up! Acetone isn't good a choice for this either.

You can purify rubbing alcohol (Isopropyl) with regular non iodized (kosher maybe?) table salt (NaCL). But proper cleaners are probably the best bet for non chemists.

No... actually both are some of the best things to use with MB components, including removing thermal paste from a CPU.

Alcohol is a good cleaner, but it's not very strong... for TOUGH jobs use nailpolish remover, and then go behind it with alcohol just to be sure.

I can't even count how many CPUs I've cleaned using those two agents.... all came out just fine and had healthy long lives. Oh, and always use lint-free rags (like the kind you use to clean glasses or CDs)... never use paper towels or regular rags/towels... they leave behind bad things.

As for the OP suggestion of OVEN CLEANER... now that's crazy (forgot to mention)... oven cleaner is CORROSIVE, and a very bad idea to use on a sensitive MB.

So as far as the rags, eye glasses no lint towels are good. Is there any other type of rag to purchase for this use?

Also, any specific procedues when using alcohol/nail polish remover? I'm guessing its simply apply rubbing alcohol to rag, be gentle but don't be too slow at rubbing the various MOBO parts to get off whatever material is stuck on there. But just in case there are some other precautions to ensure the MOBO does not expload or die:)

I feel for you. I just picked up a Dell Server at a client's office. He runs a catering company, and they were frying 100 pounds of garlic today! I put the Dell in the back seat of my car and drove home. Now my leather car seats smell like garlic!

In this case, the 'Boondock Saints furry pet treatment' is appropriate.
