Relatively on topic... but why do so many kit cars start off as Fieros? Is there some law/rule against creating your own chassis from scratch?

Could be the mid-engine design. Lots are made form Beetles too.

Fiero chassis are small, lightweight, 2 seater, mid-engine, RWD, very common, and cheap. Perfect base to build a kit on top of. To create a chassis from scratch is possible, but most people don't want to put in the many hours of work, time, and money to put something together themselves, when ready-made chassis are so commonly available. Also, many do not have the skills to begin such a project.

Not to mention, production chassis already have the proper structural bracing, proportions, strength requirements, etc. that would be required to have a safe vehicle. Plus, it's easier for the kit companies to publish the fact that the kits can be built right on top of a production chassis. If you gave 100 people the components to build their own chassis, you'd end up with 100 different ones.

Crockett's Daytona Spyder was actually a look-alike replica, built using a 1980 Corvette chassis with Ferrari-designed body panels and real Ferrari hardware inside. According to Popular Mechanics, the original replica was "spotted on a lot in Newport Beach by the show's producer."[7] Motor Trend magazine, however, claims the two show cars were bought at an auction. Al Mardikian, an auto importer had the two replicas built by Tom McBurnie, but he found himself in legal trouble and the two cars were confiscated by the Feds.[8] The producers in turn purchased the cars from the government.

In 1986, McBurnie Coachcraft and California Custom Coach both offered Daytona Spyder kits for building replicas, and turn-key models built on a Corvette chassis were available for $45k.

What's that site that sells cars that are a spitting image of lamborghinis and I think they have GM v8s in them?

I bought a ferrari kit car on a corvette chasis a few years back. Looked amazing, sounded amazing, price was amazing... entire frame was bent so the car always pulled to the left really badly. Couldn't be fixed... sent it back.
