Fence Replacement: Fair Price?

So my neighbor and I have decided to replace the fence between US. He has purchased the wood and nails needed and the cost was around $300. HE said he will split the cost in half with me, and he will do all of the labor. I was thinking since he is doing all of the labor, maybe I should pay more than half of the supply cost. I was thinking about suggesting that I pay the entire 300, since I feel bad having him do all of the work.

How long is the fence run? If it's just the normal California sub-division sized lot, $300 is a decent price for materials...If he ONLY wants half...and is willing to do the work, that's a steal. Depending on how good of neighbors you are, (are you friends, friendly neighbors, or just "Hi, how are ya?" neighbors?) then I'd adjust the amount based on that...the better neighbors you are, the more I'd be willing to pay toward the cost of materials. If he's a total shit head...just give him the amount he's requested...then bitch if he does it poorly. :p

Give him half and help. Even if you aren't handy you can at least hold boards in place.

If it takes him more than 6 hours, and $300 worth of supplies might, then it's the right thing to do to cover all the materials

I'd say either cover all materials or help with labor, anything other than that wouldnt be right imo.

A friend of mine did a similar deal when he replaced the fence around his property. He did all the labor, and his five (5!) neighbors each paid for half of the supplies for the section of fence that touched their property.

Why was he so generous, you ask?
Well, whoever had built the previous fence had put it up crooked, and in many cases well within the property line. By putting up the fence himself and not charging for labor, my friend was able to claim his property back, AND have the pretty side of the fence face his house. And the neighbors didn't complain, because hey, new fence.

That said, if your neighbor isn't moving the fence, I'd at least buy him some beer. Also, expect to get the ugly side of the fence. ;)

$300 is insanely cheap to have a wooden fence installed. I'd either pay him half & when he's installing it, make sure you provide him with beer/steak dinner, else pay him more than half.

That is, unless by installation, it simply means ripping off something like old stockade fencing, and simply nailing on some new stockade fencing to the pre-existing posts - which would take all of 30 minutes with a helper.

Bids for just our one run we just replaced (about 100' with one gate) were $1200-1500. I did it for about $600 in carefully shopped for materials, but it was a lot of work. I'd say you're being given an early Christmas.

Did we skip the part why you would even consider paying someone to replace their own fence?

And having the "pretty side" of the fence facing you is a pretty dumb method.

It is also my fence, and it looks old and badly worn out.

If the OP lives in a sub-division here in California, normally, fences are "community property" shared by the property owners on both sides...maintenance and repair are at the expense of BOTH property owners.
That's USUALLY spelled out in the deed for the property.

In our sub-division, the "pretty side" of the fence alternates...

wow, fence labor is freakin hard as hell back breaking work..

you probably should pay all of it:p even then its a steal..

300 dollars isn't much though, short fence? 4x4 post ~ 10 dollars each horizontal timbers are about 5 dollars each, the panels are a decent amount, if you buy prefab panels they cost a decent amount themselves, then theres nails and concrete, 300 doesn't go that far.

if there was concrete in the holes to remove...lol just the posts should take 6 hours unless you have special equipment.
