i had an experience with Femi-Nazi-ness at a party on July 4, 2007.
one of the women present mentioned Starhawk. as in self-declared Pagan Goddess Channeler
http://www.starhawk.org/
i have always been a little put off by people's adopted names. for example, i used to take
physical yoga classes at a place run by a pseudo Sufi Islam cult. one of the cult members
renamed himself "Steve Supreme".
Starhawk evokes similar feelings.
anyway, so what i said in the presence of these 2 dedicated feminists, was,
"i wonder if her friends ever say, "hey, Starhawk, babe"." just thinking out
loud, it's a party.
what i heard from one of the 2 feminists,
"i am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
offended." (by my use of the word babe).
Jeez, i've lived in California for maybe 30 years, i hear people use the word "babe"
all the time. i hear young people using the term "gina" (short for vagina"). the
feminist acquaintance who was SO offended emailed me the next day and asked
me to never email her again.
now, what Bill O'Reilly would say is, that's an example of PC.
what i would say is, if you find out that a particular word offends somebody, you
just don't use it around them - that's normal human etiquette.
but, in this case, i didn't get the chance to show respect for the feminist's feelings.
no big deal, but i guess that's as close as i'll get to understanding what the term
"femi-nazi" means.
though i think sometimes people use the term, and they're just referring to
someone's idiosyncracies, like the way this acquaintance felt about the use of the
word "babe".
