Female Sprinter to get Gender Test

sex is not as easily determined as many people in here think. For example, a woman may be XY, but she has a genetic defect, where her body simply does respond to testosterone. If that happens, she can compete as a female.

"But at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, eight female athletes were determined to have XY chromosomes and were booted from the Games. Further studies, however, showed that they were physiologically female even though their genes said they were male, and they were reinstated.

Genes are only a blueprint, and sometimes nature doesn't follow the blueprint precisely. Take the examples of XY athletes who appear to be women. At least five enzymes are required to synthesize testosterone, the hormone that produces most male characteristics, and occasionally one of those enzymes is defective. When that happens, the genitals are typically male and tiny, the person doesn't have much body hair and he is generally feminized. By determining which testosterone precursor is present in unusually large amounts, researchers can determine which enzyme is defective. Such people are normally eligible to compete as women.

In other genetic males, the receptor that the testosterone binds to is defective and it doesn't matter how much testosterone is present. That male is classified as androgen resistant, but the results are the same: feminization. Genitalia are typically female. Often, such people are raised as females and don't find out they are genetically male until they don't get menstrual periods. They are often tall, slender and attractive, and there has been speculation that movie stars Marlene Dietrich and Greta Garbo were in this category.

Neither anomaly gives the person strength or endurance beyond that of a normal female and subjects are allowed to compete as women.

The condition of being genetically female, or XX, but appearing male can often be traced to congenital adrenal hyperplasia, in which the adrenal glands produce excess testosterone. The woman may look like a boy with tiny male genitals, but once a month will pass blood. If the condition is caught early in life, doctors usually recommend surgery to create female genitalia. But many persons with the condition live normal lives as men.

Another possibility that could account for a disconnect between genetics and appearance is mosaicism, in which the individual has more than one set of genes, in some cases, some cells could be XX and others XY. That occurs because of a faulty division at a very early stage in the embryo, or if two embryos fuse, and can produce a variety of mixed sexual signals."http://www.latimes.com/news/sc...715267.story?track=rss

anyways, reminds me of this🙂😉

A simple gender test would be about a dozen male atot'ers looking at "her" naked.
No movement, no woman.

What a terrible comparison.

Lonyo...it's a terrible comparison as Punisher says.

1) her appearance/physique is 'somewhat manly'....not conclusive in itself...

2) her dramatic time improvement from the previous year at the very least begs the question of drugs, let alone gender verification. For 800m, there's a BIG difference for women between 1:56 and 2:03-2:04.

3) in addition to her dramatic time improvement, she also has the LEADING female 800 time this year.

Bolt has been making and breaking records for more than 6-7 years (including Roy Martin's junior record of 20.13 for 200m in 2003). He hasn't exhibited "dramatic improvement" the way Semaya has, so your insinuation of sexism is unsupported.

from another article on the matter:

"I have been quite silent on the issue, and will continue to do so because at this point, there is nothing but rumor to go on, with no confirmed (and independent) facts. In the days after her 1:56 time, it was widely reported/speculated that Semenya was born a hermaphrodite (having both male and female reproductive organs), and that she was cleared by testing done by Athletics South Africa (ASA). Both reports are unconfirmed, though I do trust my particular sources of that information."

The row over whether Semenya is a woman or a man has become a cause célèbre in South Africa, where the country?s parliament is preparing to file a complaint with the United Nations Commissioner of Human Rights over the athlete?s treatment, saying the gender verification tests are a ?gross and severe undermining of rights and privacy.?
Poor bastages are so desperate for a champion, they are trying to make it a human rights issue?

Heidi Krieger, who underwent surgery in 1997 and now lives in Germany as Andreas Krieger, has always blamed Arbeit for the role he played in supervising her drug regime under East Germany?s state-sponsored doping programme.
That is enough justification for the action right there, IMO.

Interesting... this just became way more complex. It's not like they can have an intersex-league.

yeap. should be interesting to see how it plays out. my guess is they ban her. not fair to the other female runners.

Semenya is claimed to have NO womb or ovaries ? and has internal testes, the male sexual organs which produce testosterone.

doh

Yeah, sucks for her. That said, it looks like she's not going to be stripped of her gold medal.

Quote from the IAAF:

IAAF spokesman Nick Davies also clarified the body's position should Semenya fail gender tests.

"There should be no assumption that medals would be stripped or results changed for the obvious reason that this is not a doping case, but a medical one," he said.

"If she is found to have a condition where excessive amounts of testosterone are being produced then she cannot be blamed for what happened before that fact is confirmed.

"So it would be very difficult to impose a retroactive sanction on an athlete who was entered by her federation, and whose entry was accepted by the IAAF."

She could still compete in future events as a female but would have to have the internal testes removed, assuming that it's determined that these provide an advantage. However, the huge stigma over her for each event would kill her career and any possible endorsements.

Not according to another source.

ccording to the British Times, a source close to the investigation claims the testing has revealed that "the 18-year-old had internal testes and no womb or ovaries." This has led some media outlets to call her a ?hermaphrodite? (and some even more inaccurately calling her ?a woman ? and a man?), but the truth is probably considerably more complicated. The term hermaphrodite (some scientists prefer the more accurate term ?ovotesticular disorders of sexual development?) refers to people who have both ovarian and testicular tissue. If it?s true that Semenya doesn?t have any ovaries, it?s likely that she has one of a host of other possible intersex conditions.

This exact same thing played out but two years ago.

When I think of the intended purpose of seperating the genders in professional athletics, it seems to me that all these special folks are defeating the purpose.

This issue is coming up too often these days. We need a third category for special gendered people.

The legal, social and moral questions that arise fairly boggle the mind:

Would every public facility and workplace have to build a third bathroom?

Would they command equal sports funding in school under Title IX?

Who could they possibly marry in the ~46 states that where only a marriage between a man and a woman is legal?

Would Toys 'R Us have an entire aisle dedicated to toys for them?

And finally, would ATOT fap to any of them, and if so, why?
