At this point, I wouldn't be surprised at 100% female, 100% male, herm, female steroid user, or anything else.

Either way, I kind of feel bad for Semenya. It's kind of tough to take at age 18. They (meaning the IAAF and the ASA) should have done the tests a lot sooner, you know, before the big race instead of letting it explode like this and have that overshadow the race.

Sex organs may be an indicator but the "real" test is whether there is anything in her body that would give her an unfair advantage over her competition (e.g. a bunch of extra processed testosterone). Since the male events are essentially "open" events and female events are of a lower and more rigorous standard.

She could be missing those organs from genetic problems and still be allowed to compete. After all, the IOC has ruled that people who change genders are allowed to compete in their new gender after 2 years since removal of the testes kills off the extra testosterone advantage.

There have been at least 7 previous known cases where women had XY genes that were allowed to compete because they had no extra advantage.

Eh, the only thing we can do is wait and see what the tests say. I'm guessing that if it was a simple and clear-cut case, the tests would have been done in a day. She's probably has Ovostesticular DSD or something similar, which is why it's taking so long.

:thumbsup: If indeed a female. However, I would not feel badly at all for a man being outed, humiliated, and disqualified, cheaters suck.

I remember back in the 60's and 70's when many of the "females" who competed for the Soviet Bloc nations were suspected of being males. IIRC, there were some Bulgarians who LOOKED like men...but were actually females. (I wouldn't have been surprised if they grew full beards)
Some were proven to be men...others proven to be wimmenz. Even the wimmenz were scary looking...

It could also be a genetic defect in her metabolism, altering her hormone levels...in women some oestrogen is converted into testosterone, if that occurs at an abnormal rate or metabolism of testosterone is inhibited she would have a more masculine appearance.
