Female coaches

I just wondered...

In sports we often see male coaches coaching males and females, sometimes there are female coaches coaching females. When will we see female coaches coaching male athletes?

It happens in high school; uncommon but not unheard of. Usually in basketball.

There was always chatter here in the south about whether Pat Head Summitt (legendary head coach of the Tennessee women's basketball team) could have made the jump to men's basketball; she probably could have but I doubt she would have had the success that she had in the women's game simply because recruiting would be much more difficult.

It's a shame because I've seen a lot of female coaches over the year who were better at coaching than their male counterparts.

they asked Pat a couple of times in the past if she was interested and she politely declined. There is little doubt she could compete as a coach in the men's game. Sadly we won't get to see her do it anymore

Women will never coach men teams because the concept of women yelling at men is hilarious. Unless the coach is on her period 24/7. Then maybe.... maybe...

For some REALLY weird reason I read the thread title as "Female roaches".

It could happen, but only until women gain more equality. But it's already happening (women in combat, Hilary could win next presidency, more women joining the workplace than men), but the main issue exists with the fact that women's and men's games are so much different. Also, someone who played a men's sport before will instantly garner more respect than one who has not. As far as pure brainpower, a woman genius could probably coach as well from a strategic standpoint. From a motivational standpoint, they are still at a huge disadvantage - and motivation is what could make or break a game (i.e. getting more out of your players than the other coach).

The JC I used to play basketball at tried to go with a female coach. The coach in waiting and the coach who retired (my coaches when I played) verbally attacked her to the point where she resigned. It was a big scandal from what I hear, as this was a perennial top 4 Northern CA JC program. At the time, the notion of a woman coaching men was unheard of, and the school was ahead of its time for even considering it.

I think male athletes would get used to taking coaching from women. Women tell us what to do when we are young, in school, and during marriage, and even in the nursing home.

because generally speaking men are better than women in the major sports. and many coaches are former athletes in said sports.

the worst player in the nba is probably better than the best player in the wnba.

Not skill wise. Perhaps in a direct 1v1 scenario because of the inherent physical differences, but when you look at skills the women are very good. Many coaches were mediocre players at best.

Had female drill sergeants in basic training. They yelled at men pretty good. In fact, you could hear them better from a distance.

My freshman year swim coach was a female. Later she became JV coach, then, Varsity coach. I graduated in 1998, and now she's the principal.

As others have mentioned at the college level I think they would run into recruiting problems. Fair or not that would affect their performance enough to make a male a smarter hire, possibly.

At the professional level I actually think it might work well. You would self select a lot of the head cases who couldn't handle it, and maybe end up with a team of true pros who come in to do their job.

We had a female instructor in Police College giving Physical Ed and Batton techniques as well as self defense. She was hot. I made sure I did it wrong on purpose show she could come and show me ......
