The top officer for FEMA said one of the agency's videographers was "absolutely wrong" to ask Mississippi church volunteers not to wear religious T-shirts for a video about tornado cleanup.

Angelia Lott and Pamela Wedgeworth, who are sisters, told The Associated Press that the FEMA worker videotaping the cleanup on Saturday in the small town of Ebenezer asked them to do on-camera interviews but requested that they change out of their T-shirts because of a Salvation Army logo.

Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Craig Fugate said in a statement issued Monday that the man's actions "in no way reflect FEMA's policies or priorities."
"The photographer in question was absolutely wrong," Fugate said.

Fugate also apologized to Crossgates Baptist and to the Salvation Army.

"We are proud of the work that is done by our volunteer and faith-based partners and we are proud to work side by side with them in disaster recovery efforts across the country," Fugate said. "FEMA is not the team, FEMA is only part of the team, and critical members of that team are the voluntary and faith-based organizations we work with every day."

Harper said Fugate told him the photographer had been fired.

The actions of one minor person in a large organization are not necessarily indicative of the policy of said organization.

Myself I think the camera guy was a douche and a lot of people making a big deal over nothing. It's no big deal.

You got to really want to feel the outrage. Equating one FEMA videographer, who was immediately reprimanded by the agency, with "the federal government" seems pretty ridiculous to me. But then again, I'm not engaged in a never ending, frantic search for things to be "outraged" about...

No it's not. The passage is not about concealing one's religious identity at all. It's about refraining from conspicuous public displays of piety for their own sake. To say that Jesus was repudiating visible identifiers of one's faith is absolutely ludicrous. Visible identifiers of religion (as well as religious caste) were everywhere in the culture of the time and are not repudiated. Jesus himself is said to have worn a seamless garment which served as a permanent signifier of his religious station to everyone he encountered everywhere. The historicity and/or factuality of the claims isn't even relevant here as the discussion is about what the text can reasonably be seen to be teaching - and the text definitely does NOT say that one should avoid publicly identifying one's faith.
