I recently moved into an apartment building and would it be rude to ask the neighbors I share a common wall with if they keep firearms for self defense, and if so what do they have and what ammo do they use? My point behind this is I don't want myself, or my gfriend, to get injured or killed by a stray bullet should our neighbors be forced to defend themselves.

What difference does it make? Are you planning on lining the walls with Kevlar if they have high powered rifles or something? If you ARE planning on doing that, go ahead and ask.

Why don't you just slip a counterstrike CD under every neighbor's doors so they can work on their aim?

if they have to defend themselves and it's your time to go i guess a stray bullet could get you


but i'd be more worried about other things.... lifes to short to freak out over something you can't control
 
Sorry to steal your thread, but I have a question on some ammo I saw a few days ago, and this thread reminded me.

I was at target, and saw ammo that had a regular rifle or handgun brass, but where the lead bullet would go, there was a clear plastic nose, and it was full of what looked like small shotgun bb's. What are those used for?

They were also on clearance, so go buy some if you need some 😛

I call it 'snake-shot' as that's the only thing I ever use it for -- self defense against snakes when desert camping. A little .22 loaded with that is less clumsy and more effective than anything else. I suppose it could have other practical purposes, but I can't really think of any.

I call it 'snake-shot' as that's the only thing I ever use it for -- self defense against snakes when desert camping. A little .22 loaded with that is less clumsy and more effective than anything else. I suppose it could have other practical purposes, but I can't really think of any.

Is it 'rude'? Well, I believe its inappropriate, yes. As a rule I do not discuss whether I own firearms or how many and what types unless I know you very, very, well. That kind of advertising is how people end-up coming home to find that they've been burglarized and all their guns were stolen.

But, if you're that concerned, the worse that they can say is "Umm, I don't think that's any of your business." Its not like they can have you evicted or excommunicated from something.
 
One of the best home defense fire arms is literally a sawed off shotgun loaded with a lighter shot. It will chew up anybody that's in front of it but will be stopped by walls. This advice comes from my father, who was an infantry captain and in charge of urban combat training in Berlin for years while we occupied it. I figure he should know his stuff on that topic. 😉

To the original poster, I think you are trying to find things to worry about. Are you really that concerned about stray rounds hitting you?? What are the odds of a gun battle breaking out in your building?? Go take a walk, get a hobby, go fishing. You don't live in the Gaza Strip or something do you??

 
Yes it would be rude. Well, maybe not rude, but they would think that you would want to know for later on when you ROB them.

They would get the impression that you are a nutcase.

Yeah.... snake-shot, bird-shot, cat-shot..... it's all the same. You can shoot a gallon jug of water from about 50 ft and not even puncture it. They are mainly used to scare stuff, not kill it.

It is also used in some prisons for riot control (being phased out in favor of bean bag rounds)

you can use that stuff in barns to shoot rats and pigeons. Won't hurt the barn.

They would probably think you're a bit strange. I have never heard of this as being a problem.

But if you really want to know, approach it like this:

"Hi, I'm your new neighbor. By the way, I was wondering what type of ammo and guns you have. You see, I would like to make sure that I have the same caliber weapons so that if we're in a firefight against the bad guys, we'd have compatible ammo. I would hate to grab one of your clips only to find out it won't fit in my gun! Say, when is that NRA banquet????"
