Feel terrible about towing car

So there was this car in my spot yesterday when I went home for lunch and again when I came home from class. It had a parking sticker from the property manager but it was from a different building. The building is on a street that is currently under construction. Well, seeing as how we have assigned spots and I don't know which are assigned and which are not, I had this car towed from my spot, #62.

I noticed there was another strange car parked in #63. It also had a sticker from the building that is on the street that is under construction. At this point, I'm thinking that the property manager relocated some of these vehicles to our lot. I emailed the property manager last night and told them that I had a car towed and I think there might be a mistake.

I get a call today and was told that these vehicles were relocated. The lady then told me that I was supposed to be in spot #61. Now, I've seen several different cars park in this spot but never thought anything of it because it's not my spot. I've never had any complaints about me being in 62. I remember when I called to get assigned a spot, the lady told me that 61 and 62 were open. I told her it didn't matter which one I had but she told me to take 62 because it was closer to the door. They thought I had 61 and assigned the towed car to 62.

I feel terrible. I basically towed this car when the owner thought he/she was parking in the right spot. The property manager told me to keep parking in 62 and they would get it straightened out. I just feel bad because now this person is going to come looking for their vehicle and wonder what happened to it.

Now, what should I do? The property manager has me parking in 61 when I've always parked and thought I was supposed to be parking in 62. I have no real proof that I was told to park in 62, it's their word against mine. I just don't need anymore stress today.

UPDATE: The property manager has taken responsibility for the incident. However, they can't find the person who's car was towed. Apparently, the car doesn't match the description of the cars that the tenant provided. I guess it was decided that they wrote it down wrong and if I was wrong then they had ample opportunity to tell me I was parked in the wrong spot (I've parked there for 9 months now). However, they told me that they would let me know who owns the car and whether or not they are 21 so I can buy them a 6-pack of a drink of their choice.

dang, you better move, that other dude is going to mess up your car when they figure this out

good luck! :sun:

it's the manager's fault. they told you to use 62, and they put the car there. if they're good people, they'll pay for the tow and the owner shouldn't have to pay anything.

Let me guess, you live in Boston or somewhere along the Eastern seaboard. The only solution to parking crap like this is to "Go West young man!"

I never understood the mentality of the people that calls and tow other people's car, do they have any relatives that live?

It would be a lot less of an issue in my mind if the owner of the towed car only had to find his car and pick it up even though that isnt fun. However he will go and pick it up and likely pay $100+ to get it released. Money which should be your bill.

Is it your place to call to have a car towed when it's in your spot? I'd think that would be the building manager's responsibility. I'm kind of surprised that the towing company would even tow a car at the request of a tenant.

No, the manager puts up the numbers and tells us just to have cars in our spots towed. In this case, we both thought we were in the rights spots. It's obviously no secret that I have been parking in 62. I guess, according to the property manager, that it's just been vacant all this time. However, I distinctly remember the property manager telling me to take 62 because it was closer to the door than 61. It wouldn't make sense, if this was their reasoning, that they'd put me in 61 and not 62 if 62 was and has always been vacant.

What the hell kind of towing company tows a car because some random resident in an apartment says to?

In all fairness, the towing company contracts the work from the apartment manager. The guy who towed the car looked at the parking sticker, saw the car wasn't in the right spot, and towed it. The property manager never told the towing company that there would be relocation.

In this case, either the property manager or myself will be paying for the tow.

so you park in 62 when some one else parked in 62, and there was someone else in 63, so you had the guy in 62 towed so you can park in 62 even though there was the strange car in 63 but then you called and found out you were to be in 61 not 62 and you had the car towed out of 62, because 62 is where you always parked, though you were to park in 61, never minding who was in 63, and your feeling bad because 61 was where you were to be but parked in 62 finding strange car in 62 and in 63, had car towed from 62 since thats where you were always parking, even though it was to be 61, but now your worried you did the wrong thing having the car towed from 62 because you wasnt supposed to be parked there this whole time but in 61?

I think I would find the guy who you had towed from 62 and explain to him that you thought you was supposed to park in 61, and had been parking in 62 this whole time, and just now started seeing the cars there in 62 and 63 and in thinking 62 was your spot, not knowing anything about 61 till now, had his car towed from 62, leaving 63, even though you should of had his car towed from 63 too if you had felt that way about the car being in 62, though you were to be in 61, not knowing 61 was where you were supposed to be at the time, but then parked in 62 feeling good about yourself to find now you had a huge mistake towing car from 62, and it was all a big misunderstanding and want to pay the guy who parked in 62 the towing bill for having his car towed fro 62, thinking 62 was yours, when 61 was, not knowing 61 was you, but still parked in 62 thinking it was, and really at the time should of towed 63 as well.

Thats what I would do.

That was about 10 times more confusing then the OP.

I read it as there were two strange cars, in spots #62 and 63. OP called and had car from 62 towed(because he thought it was his spot), then called and reported the car in 63. When he made the call about the car in 63 (which came after the towing of the car in 62), he found out he had been assigned to 61 despite being told to park in 62. And so, he feels bad about having a car towed when it shouldn't have been.
