Hi.

The more I read about SSDs, the more overwhelmed I get, given complexities I did not know existed.

I had no idea getting compatibility right was such a big deal with these.

So, Crucial scan, naturally suggests this one of theirs, below via link.

Any comments? I think I can do better, but I now worried about brand, model and compatibility. I know nothing about these drives.

PS/Addendum: do U guys think the prices of decent, normal capacity SSDs will go down in the next year? If so, I will wait.

Yes, prices will always go down on technology. Every time something better comes out, prices on older stuff will drop. If you wait, something better is always around the corner. Might as well just get something when you need/want it and can afford it. Otherwise, you'll just be waiting forever and doing without.

And I'm assuming you're talking about the Crucial M500. I've seen many people who own them say they like them and are good drives. I say go for it. $189 is getting to be a pretty normal price for the 240-250GB sized drives.

I have 6 of the 960gb M500s in one of my servers at work. They're only about 2 months old, but they're working great so far.

Are you using Google Translate to form words in English? Also, Plextor, Samsung and Intel all make great SSDs.

Re yr question...of course not. Never used it in my life. What precisley, did you have trouble understanding?

Given what I've read online, my take is, the quality of these drives is not Mfg indigenous, but individual drive indigenous, and there is good and bad within each Mfg's line.

But thanks for the brand recommendations.

You seem to type in text message format; I find this surprising for an educated writer.

Virtually all of those drives will remain operational for their lifetime. I have an Intel SSD I've been using for over 5 years, and a few Plextor M3s going for 3. The Plextor SSDs are in RAID-0 with no TRIM, being used as cache drives; I probably write to their maximum capacity every two days... for a few years now. They're getting replaced by two Intel 3700s, as I've moved to a new platform finally (was on X58). The 160GB Sata-II Intel drive I'll probably kill somehow, someway.

I learned, via a splendid documentary last year, one of Valentino's INFINITE INDULGENCES, is to at all times, be surrounded by not a brace of Pugs, but by a veritable HERD of Pugs, He adorns them disgustingly with such as earrings. It's sickening. But do they eat rocks? lol

Anyhow, thanks for the additional data re the drives....am in the usual learning journey to clarity.

Now, of course, I am as addicted to texting as anyone, so of course, and inevitably, except in my work, it impacts. I am aware of this phenomenon which abounds....but sometimes it just takes over.

Same deal with Twitter which is eroding communication at large because no Tweet can exceed 140 characters.

Just met a deadline.....and now, I am going to read every review of every SDD on Newegg.....and, come back if I like one for, expert feedback!
I already see some for just over $100 on sale!

Just caught this. To whom exactly, do you refer?

Were my undergrad degree NOT from Cornell (it is, B.A in English), I think I would be getting paid to do the same work I do. What I bring to the table (and I do not want this thread to go off topic, but you started it), is almost nothing I learned in my impressive to many, formal education.

One learns very little that matters from CVs. And, I mean, in every professional arena, starting with Medicine.

I am hoping you are not among the contingency of malcontents/walking incendiary devices here. I mean it.🙂

Bless U! Most important, relevant feedback ever. I said, and meant in original post, one reason I feel overwhelmed, owes to the compatibility issues I first did not know about.

Tell me, cause I'm sure you have reasons, why would you recommend at least 240 GBs?

I am fanatic about no junk files in my systems, nothing outdated,etc., and I do not store, say AVI files.

Edit: The crucial drive you linked me to on the egg.....also has an "M" before the 500. What does that mean????

Wait! Second edit: I just went back to Crucial interactive again. this time, they list MANY compatible/recommended drives for this individual system.....and, all of them have an 'M"!!!~

Now, given Crucial's interactive tool produced SDD recommendations for this individual desktop system, every one of which has the M, should I not trust that as being valid?

Newegg had the 128GB Samsung 840 for $70 a little while back, and a refurbished 128GB Crucial M500 for $66 before that. Amazon had some great prices, too. I don't see any deals that good right now, though.

If you're shopping on a budget, it might be worth waiting a couple weeks to see if any other deals that good come along.
 
Also, performance on all current SSDs increases pretty dramatically when you go from 128GB to 256GB. It's a bit easier to find good deals on 256GB drives, too. If you're concerned with getting the best deal overall (rather than just a low price), it might be worth considering a 256GB drive.

Thanks for this. Cause I am only starting to learn about them, I can not yet determine what is a god deal and what is NOT.

Re affording: on paper, I could afford most anything. But for me, it's what I can afford easily.

Who don luv the Egg? But way back, I got a new, high end WD SATA from them, and it had more bad sectors than WD diagnostics could count. They put it right, of course, and WD send me a fully tested one.

Still feeling overwhelmed, now, because I am getting mixed data here re compatibility issues.

And, this new/used system is like the wind....as I expected, fastest I've ever had. So maybe I am just being greedy for even, now, wanting an SSD!

Edit: while I am sure, no bargains here, this is just to show that Crucial interactive tool lists all SSDs compatible with this system as "M" Cause, someone here said that is wrong.
