hello,

i've been inspired to try to build a mythtv box and i was looking for comments on the following components. prices are from newegg:

  • Antec ARIA Aluminum MicroATX Cube Case with 300W Power Supply, Model "LS-968(ARIA)" -RETAIL ($97)
BIOSTAR "K8VGAM" VIA K8M800 Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket 754 CPU -RETAIL ($69)
    AMD Sempron 3100+ 1.8GHz, 256KB L2 Cache Socket 754 Processor - Retail ($124)
    Crucial 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-3200 - OEM ($75)
Biostar nVIDIA GeForce MX4000 Video Card, 64MB DDR, TV-Out, 8X AGP, Model "VN4000XB1T-H00" -RETAIL ($34)
    Lite-On 16X DVD-ROM, Model SOHD-167T Black, RETAIL ($24)
Seagate 160GB hard drive from outpost ($60)
LeadTek WinFast 2000XP Deluxe (already own)

this comes out to $483 which is in the range that i'm interested in spending.

i need tv-out to connect to my relatively cheap tv. i'm interested in basic pvr functionality (scheduled recording, time shifting, etc.), playing xvid files, playing dvds.

i'm concerned about noise and heat. without modifying anything and using everything just as it is, will this be noisy to have next to the tv?

I'm thinking of doing a MythTV box also.

I want an Nvidia chipset (good Linux support), TV out, and SPDIF. would really like to find a small Nfroce board with everything onboard.

The Winfast 250 or 350 seems to be the most reccomended for MythTV. These card do HW encoding and the 350 also does HW decode. Otherwise something based on the BT878 should be supported. This page might help.

Yeah, I'd recommend a hardware encoder card as well. Be careful with the Winfast 250 - great cards, but they have two versions and one is not Linux-compatible.

hey I wanna build a mythtv box too 😀

I'm tired of paying replaytv fees...and they're going for a FORTUNE on ebay! HAHAHAHA 😀

'd stay away from MicroATX. Your choice in cards is very limited. The Overture is a very nice case and fits in the typical entertainment center.

ahhhhhhh, thx! good helps 😀 I'll have to have a look for that box 😀

did U build one todd33?
