I don't understand why this stuff is illegal, or even unethical. Why can't you use campaign contributions to pay for your rent? The law basically nullifies the principle of modern representative democracy, that ordinary people run for office. You can't have a full time job while campaigning, so the result of these "ethics" laws is that you must have accumulated enough wealth to pay for life expenses before running for office...

Do you prefer Chief of Rationalization? Not an apologist.
Someone who has made three runs at the United States Senate should certainly know the rules involved. It is only be the grace and wisdom of the voters of the State of Delaware that Ms. O'Donnell is not already a career legislator. What I mean by a "career politician" is someone who devotes his life to knowing all the intricate rules, which for anyone else is a very large task and relies largely on the trust of a lot of people around you to also do the right thing every time.
What could possibly go wrong in a system where political contributions are directly converted to personal income?I don't understand why this stuff is illegal, or even unethical. If you like the current system where wealthy contributors influence legislation by easing the run for office, imagine how much better it could be when that money goes straight into a legislator's pocket.
So is this investigation a political witch hunt and an abuse of power by the federal government? Looks like it to me. I say broaden the investigation and investigate people on all sides while you are at it.
I agree completely. Every candidate of any party against whom their campaign workers have made credible accusations of diverting campaign contributions for personal use should be thoroughly investigated. So is this investigation a political witch hunt and an abuse of power by the federal government? Looks like it to me. I say broaden the investigation and investigate people on all sides while you are at it.
