Fedora Core vs Ubuntu for desktop use

I just put Ubuntu 9.10 on my laptop and it's quite a bit better than I remember 8.04 being. It recognized everything... wireless, bluetooth, dvd-rw, media card reader... it sleeps and wakes properly, battery life is comparable to Windows 7.

So far my biggest complaint is audio. First, the default volume was 100% on first boot - that's absolutely idiotic no matter how you look at it. Second, the volume seems to be adjustable only in large increments, like 10% at a time. Third, there's a pop when audio starts to play.

I think I'll use it for a while longer and see if I can get used to Open Office and getting all my documents (docx) reformatted properly.

Does openoffice have some kind of plugin to open the docx, xlsx etc documents? I find I always have trouble dealing with that new format. Even if I install the viewer, it does not format properly. We occasionally get those at work and at church so it would be nice to find a way to do a proper conversion to a standard format.

It's built into the app... no plugin required. It will edit and create docx files too... but the formatting isn't preserved when moving from Office 2007 on Windows to Open Office.

Ohh that's good to know, I probably have an older version then. I'll have to try the latest next time I run accross a docx file.

Install Openoffice on your Windows box and give it a try.

Win2k is still the best OS microsoft has ever made. They were on the perfect path with that OS. It was rather light, even for it's time, and did everything an OS should do, and not more. If they would of taken win2k and simply added better support for newer technologies, instead of bloat, it would of been awesome.

I actually installed it yesterday for someone (older pc) and it gave me a fuzzy feeling inside. :biggrin:

If they would of taken win2k and simply added better support for newer technologies, instead of bloat, it would of been awesome.

You made a similar comment about web browsers recently, do you really believe it's possible to add "support for newer technologies" without making it bigger in the process?
