I live on the east coast and from Newegg Fedex always estimates a 4 days for delivery, but it always comes 2-3. I Fedexed (is that a verb?) something Monday to Florida that was scheduled for Friday but they delivered today.

pay for the faster shipping, dont expect 2 day when you pay for express saver

i know, people complain that their packages aren't being delivered faster than they paid for!

Well, it was just sitting at the distribution center! And it's probably gonna sit there for tomorrow too..

how would they make as much money if they delivered express saver in 2 days? Who would pay extra for 2 day shipping?

I agree with what you said, it is purely business decision.

To answer your question as to why UPS delivers quickly:

There are several policies for reducing congestion in the system from queueing theory point of view. For example, UPS may see that delivering package if space is available on truck is rational business decision whereas FedEx may strictly prioritize packages with them.

My answer may not be likeable, but it is the fact:

- Each shipment has quoted delivery time.
- Customer paid and chose desired shipment method (by paying less for ground or paid higher for air/2nd day etc.). So all packages are prioritized.
- FedEx does not have to pay for shipments that they hold in their locations. You can argue that FedEx has to pay for carrying costs (warehouse rent/cooling/material handling etc., but most of times logistics companies use cross-docking to minimize handling)
- Finally FedEx truck when leaves each morning for delivery has limited capacity and then it has constraint of not visiting FedEx DC (distribution center) say no more than 1 time, so now space in truck each morning has prime importance. (EDIT: If you are engineering student, google on TRAVELING SALESMAN PROBLEM)
- So FedEx chooses to hold your shipment over leaving other customer dissatisfied.

Hope this helps.

When you consider that they'll deliver a package to your building, even your own office, while your package sits on their truck, you realize that your first two points are the main reasons. Add to that the fact that UPS delivers as early as possible.

I don't blame FedEx though, it's a business decision - if people want overnight or two day delivery, they can pay for it.

I had a Fedex saver package delivered overnight once, and I ordered it late in the day too and got it early the next morning. (Newegg, Ca. to Ohio)

But usually I get them in 2 or 3 days.

The OP is not complaining about the speed of delivery. He just thinks it's silly they will hold the package because it is "not scheduled for delivery."

i think it's a good thing... since people look at that and plan their time accordingly... not everyone is always at home... easiest to just go "by the book".

I've had a package before that actually went out on the truck, then went back to the warehouse because it wasn't scheduled for delivery yet. That bugged me, if it's already out on the truck and already driving by my house, it seems like it would have been only logical.
If I get my package early, doesn't that mean I would be more likely to use them for shipping in the future? Not dropping it off, even though it was loaded up and driven to my neighborhood, but not dropped off because it was "too early" kinda leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
And then of course there's the rare occurence where I actually pay extra for faster shipping and then it takes LONGER to get to me. I got a refund for the extra shipping price, but that's hardly the point.

If a package actually goes out on the truck for delivery and doesn't get delivered, that's stupid.
But if it just sits in the local warehouse for a day or two, I don't see anything wrong with that. Each package takes a certain amount of time to load up and takes up space on the truck. If they are really busy, it makes sense that they would need to prioritize and only take the packages that need to be delivered that day. The extra time and space needed to load up all the packages that are at the warehouse but not scheduled for delivery yet, might be enough extra work to make them late with the other packages.

But I am sure Fedex does not have a standard policy of holding packages just for the sake of not delivering early. Almost all the FedEx packages I've received have been delivered at least a day earlier than the expected delivery date. And obviously many other people here have also experienced this. I think it's pretty obvious that this only happens occasionally and is probably due to understaffing or just a large number of packages at certain times in certain areas.

UPS will always have my package where i told them to hold it at too. Fedex drives it all over town you have to guess where it is.

Behold the power of logistics.

Freight companies will "hold" a package for delivery if it is in their best interests. #1 best interest is SLA. If capacity dictates that there is enough room on the outgoing transit for your package and it won't affect the SLA of any priority parcels ahead of yours, your package will get added to that outgoing transit or delivery schedule. If there is not enough capacity and your package isn't part of the SLA group, it gets left behind.

Yes, it's as simple as that.

This thread was obviously not in the SLA group.
