FedEx delivers morphine and drugs to dog

My dad isn't doing so well and has just come out of the hospital ICU and is now under care of hospice at home. He is 82 with copd and the doctors say anywhere from a month to a couple months, but nobody knows. To keep my dad comfortable hospice gives him morphine along with other drugs.

Today I get a call from my mom telling me that a neighbor knocked on the door really upset . Apparently hospice sent the weekly medication supply via fedex and it was left at a neighbors house on the porch where their 100lb+ dog shredded the entire box, drugs and all , all over the backyard. My mom was home the entire week and the neighbors dog barks loudly at anyone that walks near it , if they tried to deliver it to her they didn't try hard. Fedex is now claiming it isn't their fault and that it is normal procedure to leave packages with a neighbor and even though the package is marked signature required , they still left it at the wrong house and without a signature.

The dog seems okay and it took awhile to locate what we could find of the drugs all over the yard. Hopefully we got it all. It just pisses me off that fedex would do something like this. I know it wasn't with malice but it has been a hell of a week for the family and this kind of stuff just adds more crap that isn't needed right now.

bullshit. FedEx and the driver are lying through their teeth.

That is not the type of package that they would simply drop off without signature.

Wouldn't surprise me. My dad ordered a new computer (I didn't have time to build it for him when he needed it) and the deliver (can't remember if he said it was Fed Ex or UPS) gave him the box for with the PC. All over the box, on every side in giant bold letters it said signature required. The slip on the box for the carrier said signature requried. checked the website that put it together and shipped it to him and it says on the shipping section signature requred for all deliveries.

The employee just gave it to him and that was that, he was a bit confused expecting to sign as well.

Having done hospice before where drugs were delivered via FedEx I know for a fact that those packages can't be left on a porch. They have to be signed for by an adult.

The driver can get in shitloads of trouble for delivering schedule 2 drugs without a sig.

Not only that even a neighbor should be a no-no, do you know them well enough to trust them with a box full of narcotic pain meds?, these sell for big bucks on the street. OP, sorry to hear about your dad, hope you get to spend some time with him before his time comes..

I've had many, many packages that were marked "Signature Required" and they were simply left without any signature. Often, someone is waiting at home for the delivery, but the driver just throws it any old place and drives off without knocking. Other times, they don't even come by and they falsely report to the dispatcher that a delivery attempt was made.

I think the drivers are trying to meet some quota or something and they cut every corner they can.

Sort of. UPS is hourly, so is USPS and maybe DHL.

Fedex is different. The drivers either own their own routes or work for a subcontractor who owns the route they are driving. The sooner they reach threshold (throw all the packages in their truck) the sooner their day is over. No point milking it.

I have to write notes and beg drivers to waive the signing requirement since I both don't have a car and work when they deliver : ( I'm on a military base too so it's not like I'm worried about theft. So at least some places they're strict about the signing thing.

Signature requirements are largely up to the driver, back in the day COD's also if not collected by the driver were up to the shipper to get (which sucked).

I have seen more specific signature requirements like "must be signed by someone over 18/21", "must be signed by recipient only", etc.

.

that is 100% pure bullshit

How does FedEx know if my neighbor and I hate each other or not? Just because they live next to me doesn't mean a thing. If it requires a signature they need to get one from you.

Sorry to hear about your dad. I think the FedEx driver was definitely at fault but, I'm not surprised that they would deny any wrongdoing. Work up a funny take on the situation with plenty of details and tell your dad. I'm sure he could use a laugh.

were any of the drugs salvagabe? if not what is Hospice going to do? will they replace them? or will they say the dog ate my drugs excuse wont work and not replace them?

Hospice was good enough to replace them without any cost to us. We still had the box and most of the drugs like the morphine was in a plastic bottle that had teeth marks and we gave that to the hospice worker as proof. My dads mood hasn't been good with a lot of comments about how he was all done, there was nothing left, and he has already told everyone that he is not to be resuscitated . He calls the drugs they give him 'happy pills' .My dad is stable for now and actually laughed about it saying that maybe that is why that dog was howling so much that night.
