"Employees involved in security work, the FBI, CIA, Defense Department, nuclear materials, IRS, and jobs essential to national security are excluded"

WOO! Wont see my salary suckas!

remember that's BASE salary, not what they actually earned. my mailman told me he makes a KILLING on OT. 32 hours of overtime a month adds up quickly! plus a nice pension, health, etc

If they are a mail carrier using their own vehicle they are also making another small fortune in mileage compensation.

Were you married? Kids? Have a good health plan? Saving for retirement? College 529? Fixing up a house?

At that point in time i wasn't married and had not had kids(that i was aware of anyway!), i was contributing the max to my IRA every year and had decent health-insuracnce.

What does that have to do with a job's salary? Having those things doesn't have any bearing on the job or the pay so why do you even bring it up?

i think he was insinuating that because i wasn't part of the 1% i should feel ashamed of my life and vote democrat so i can tax the rich and feel better about my situation

If you live in the "bay area" as your profile states, that is barely enough to live on.

In 2011, the median income in Santa Clara county was $45,000. Are you really suggesting the median salary isn't enough to live on? Because apparently a lot of people do. What you probably want to say is it's hard to live an upper-middle class life or maybe even a lifestyle that used to be associated with the middle-class in prior decades.

Considering being a postman doesn't require special skills or training, it's a bit odd that it's an above-average salary.

Sorry, don't believe you. Why you may ask? Because I have several friends and some family that live there and make less. Now, if you want to live like someone making $53K in the midwest, sure that's another matter. But saying its barely enough to live on just isn't true.

BASE salary, + insurance + PTO + pension + OT

thank your local unions!

I find it amusing that the people who are most likely to want public employees' pay disclosed under FOIA requests are also the people most likely to bellow "GTFO! IT'S NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS!" when asked how much they make.

Can you please source that statistic? The census data shows a median household income of $86K, and that average includes single income families as well as people who are single.

http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/06/06085.html

This statistic suggests a number much higher than 45K for individual income, but then again, it does not show individual income directly. So please supply your link.

It's pretty easy to see what houses cost and what houses and apartments rent for out here. You can check Craig's List and find out in 5 minutes.

You can live off that out here, especially in the east bay. But it's just barely getting by. You're looking at 35% of your take home going to rent, bare minimum, and it's probably more than that.

I searched for Santa Clara County Median income, because that is the County you mentioned.

Anyway, that's fine. It's very hard for an individual to live off that here. In a household with 2 incomes, you benefit from economies of scale because your income doubles but not your rent. A 2-income household that pulls in $90K can live much more easily here than a single income household at $45K. Just check what the rents are out here. You can live off that but it's very spartan.
