Federal Protection of OBESE people.

"This is an issue of basic civil rights," said Richardson. "There are no federal laws that protect obese Americans from discrimination in the workplace, school, or anywhere else. This must change."

Disgusting.

Another "victim" class. Instead of fixing the problem we are going to excuse them and PROTECT them. Hell, out of the 5 people at work with handicap tags only 2 have real problems, the other 3 are lardasses (400lb+ category)

He did good while governor, but what is up with him now ? Sorry, obese isn't a disability, its a sign of bad eating habits and lack of physical activity. Its worse than smoking.

ADA protection means that your medical insurance could go up at work as new procedures and medicines would have to be covered. Can't wait till some fatty with a lawyer friend starts suing prospective employers who turn them down under the suspicion that it only occured because they were fat.

I need to find that Cleveland quote and put it in my sig. I'll post it here because I think it has a bit of relevance to this topic IIRC.

Well, it's not exactly about this subject as it came about when he vetoed a bill for emergency funds for texas after a drought. But here it is anyway since I dug it up.
"...I do not believe that the power and duty of the General Government ought to be extended to the relief of individual suffering which is in no manner properly related to the public service or benefit. A prevalent tendency to disregard the limited mission of this power and duty should, I think, be steadily resisted, to the end that the lesson should be constantly enforced that, though the people support the Government, the Government should not support the people." Grover Cleveland

I agree this is off base.

However I am not surprised P&Nrs miss the point that Corporations have brought this on themselves with their nefarious treatment of employees.

Yes, people need to take responsibility for overeating as well but it is the work environment and treatment also contributing to this disaster called "a global economy".

So how people are treated by their company determines whether they are obese or not? 😕

Oh wait - it's just another troll by dave, nevermind.

Tell you what Dave. I'll meet you at Tulsa International Airport this afternoon and buy you a one way ticket to anywhere in the world outside of the United States and North America. Anywhere...you name it. Only catch is that you have to stay gone.

Preferably somewhere without any sort of internet access please.

How is this different from money spent on drug addictions and cancer caused by smoking cigarettes, or alcoholism?

The differrence is that you have to eat to live.

Sure you do....but you don't have to eat a whole large pizza in one sitting and wash it down with a 1/2 gallon of Mt. Dew.

I'll chip in! I'll even throw in a gallon of milk, since it's supposedly $6 a gallon there for Dave . ..

$6 a gallon for milk? That's one of his rants I haven't heard yet.

I guess I'm not looking at this from that angle. I'm looking at it from a special protection angle. Cancer doesn't get you special protection although alcoholism seems to. I don't think alcoholism should have the special protections it has, just like I don't think obese should have special protections.

Yeah I pay around $6 a gallon too over here. But it's real milk I buy from the farm. The crap they put on supermarket shelves is like milk + who knows what additives plus antibiotics and growth hormones they injected into the cows. 🙂 That's the milk that makes you OBESE!

But getitng back to the topic, what's next, we'll introduce a fund to reimburse people who chose gamble their money away?

You know these types of regulation are what causes health insurance rates to rise at 5-10% a year. Then these same politicians will come back next year and say we need UHC because health insurance plans are rising too fast for the american consumer and business.

Self serving? I think so!

People who are obese due to a physical problem or a mental problem are handicapped.
It is less clear if you can be excessively overweight, say over 400 pounds and not have some physical or mental problem that is the cause.
The very idea of eating so much that you weigh over 400 pounds, to me at least, would seem to prima facie evidence of illness.

You would change your tune if you could see a lot of the people who work in my building. Like the fat ass guy who has a handicapped sticker and can barely walk because of his lard ass. Yet on his way into the building you see him munching on a full size bag of Cheetos and carry at least 1 2 liter bottle of Mt. Dew. Every morning.

He is just one example of human whales that work here and have handicapped stickers due to their size. My favorite is probably the lady who can't walk the 25 feet across the air bridge from the garage into the building without stopping 4 or 5 times. Lots of fun getting stuck behind her on your walk into the building. She's slow, sweaty, can barely breathe and is wide enough that you can't walk around her on the air bridge. In her cubicle is a fridge jam packed with Dr. Pepper and ice cream sandwiches.

LOL; they bring it on themselves. No need for special attention and protections in the workplace. Too fat? Too fucking bad; eat less and workout more.

First thing that popped in my head after reading Dave's rebuttal is that he was a fatty himself, it really would explain so many things.

dunno if all the skinny people are just replying to this, I am not overly 400 or 300 but around 220... Anyway..... As soon as they start getting rid of fast food, soft drinks... Put an extra high tax on stuff thats loaded with salt, sugar and fat.... It's no wonder 3 out of 10 are considered overweight ...

I think you need to treat food as a drug and get rid of the pushers... As far as I am concerned, being fat is no worse then smoking, and drinking... No one said it's unlawful to be fat... So are we gonna start discriminating over 30% of americans and start to deny health care and other services? Maybe we should stop letting in people that are over the BMI score? Want to be an american? Well, your gonna have to lose the fat. Face it, the america is fat. Due, to lack of exercise and poor eating choices... Now deal with it. It's only going to get worse BTW...

So what is your score...

Yeah..just what we need...more government regulation.

The problem isn't that fast food exists...the problem is that people have no sense of personal responsibility and want to blame someone else for their being an overweight tub of goo. It isn't the government's job to protect you from yourself. If you don't want to be a fat ass then put down the 3rd helping from the buffet and go ride a bike or something.

God damn. Why would anyone think it is the government's job to keep people from being fat? What's next.....the government mandating I have to have those non slip strips in my shower to insure I don't slip and kill myself?

Stop all the damn nannyism and take some responsibility for yourself. Want to eat a Big Mac every day? Fine, but don't come whining to me when you weigh 370 and your cholesterol is 400 expecting me to feel sorry for you.
