I need to rant. A brief summary of my video editing hobby so far. I create home videos, and videos of dance and theater performances.
  • I started with Windows Movie Maker in 2008. Terrific software. Stable, fast, and simple. Great to learn on.
  • A year later, upgraded to Premiere Elements 7. Mistake. Hated it. Not stable, not fast, not intuitive. I used it for one project. Went back to Movie Maker for a bit.
  • I think in 2010, I bought Sony Vegas Movie Studio 11. Terrific software. Stable, fast, and powerful. Easy to use. I was quite happy for years.
  • Then last year, I bought a 4k camera, and 4k is a bit slow to edit in Movie Studio 11. I tried the trial version of version 13, and it is pretty fast with 4k. But it is so similar to version 11 - seems to have the same limitations. I wanted something new, and hopefully improved.
  • So I switched back to Premiere Elements 14. Big mistake. BUGGY. My first project was huge, so I figure it was just too much for premiere to handle. 2 hour musical, lots of pans and zooms of 4k footage. It sometimes fails to open. It often failed to export. It sometimes just doesn't play some files, or cuts out audio on some files. Just so many bugs. I fought with it, and eventually got everything to work, and the output was good.
  • Stupidly, I figured my next project is smaller, so I'll give it a shot. I had learned some of the limitations - like it can't handle two files in two different folders with the same filename. Starting a new project, it generally works ok, but now I'm up to 15 minutes of video and I dunno - 50 files. BUGS again. Just a disaster. I'm giving up. I only have about 5 minutes to go, but I'll literally edit the rest in anther software and append the two rendered files together in FFMPEG.
  • I'm just sick of Premiere Elements.
  • I'll try Resolve, because it is free and supposed to be powerful. If I find it isn't a good fit, I'll try Vegas Pro or Edius Pro 8.
