As my company uses UPS, I will tell you why UPS is much stronger than their competitors; They are cheaper. When huge corporations decide which company to ship through, they don't usually care if there are a small % of damages, as long as the cost is lower and the service is convenient for them.

Personally and professionally I have had the experience that FedEx takes better care of my packages, while UPS has better tracking and more prompt service overall.

Nope. Middle of June 06.

There was no good reason as to why it took so long. Especially from New Jersey to Detroit.

A majority of online companies submit the information to UPS electronically and the package isn't actually ready to be picked up for as much as 2 days.

This is part of the problem. People blame the shipping companies for things that aren't their fault at all. About 70% of all damaged packages are the result of poor packaging that doesn't meet the requirements of the carrier.

I worked at an ink manufacturing plant in SF during Summers back in college. Most ink was packaged in 5lb steel cylinders and taped shut. We'd pack six of these into thick cardboard boxes that were even double layer on the top. We'd occasionally get these boxes back from UPS and they'd be partially squished.

So, ya, once I started selling things on EBay, I made sure to never ever use UPS. Everything is USPS or Fedex Ground.

Either way it was majorly obnoxious. It was shipped from Newegg which usually is very reliable about shipping and packaging. I don't know who's to blame. All I know is I placed my ordered for my new camera at 8am EST today and I'll put money that it'll come tomorrow from FedEx, unless it ships from Cali.

There you go. Newegg is notorious for doing this. They submit the shipping info to UPS pretty much immediately after an order is placed, but don't actually hand the package to UPS for a day or two.

For me each company takes about the same number of days to arrive to my apartment. Fedex gets there at 9-10 in the morning while UPS gets there at 6 in the evening. My recent delivery of speakers came at 630!

Actually, I find that FAR more often I have UPS packages sit in the warehouse for a day or so, while FedEx packages are delivered the day they arrive, for the most part.

For example, I just had a package delivered yesterday to my local UPS station at 8AM, and it sat there all day and will be delivered tonight. Now I know my UPS delivery guy doesn't come until 6PM... why did it just sit in the warehouse all day? Because they had an extra day... so they could. The worst part is, while it was 3-day shipping, the "expected delivery time" was 2 days, so while they "had" 3 days, they said it would likely be here in two.

Bottom line is, I always think that if I'm sending something UPS is the generic, bargain shipper, and FedEx is the premier carrier.
