automatics never need a $500+ clutch job.
No, you just have to replace the entire $2000 tranny.

Any half decent auto tranny will generally last the life of the vehicle.

A lot of people I know buy cars because they're "sporty" and "fast", however, lots of people are afraid to get a manual transmission. One of my friends is getting a new Scion tC for those reasons and still got an automatic. One of my friends bought a new WRX, again, automatic...

I know for a fact they don't drive in lots of stop and go, very little of it infact.

My issue is not with them buying an automatic, but rather being scared to even TRY a manual car!

I'm not one to bash automatics, but for some cars it doesn't make much sense to buy an auto on, with the two you listed pretty high on my list.

Performance suffers a lot on auto WRXs, it's a full 1+ second drop in acceleration. It turns a high 14 sec car into a high 15 second car.

TC is not as bad, but the manual is still supposed to be geared better for power along with one more gear.

Less to think about. Shift to D, step on gas, go.

Yeah, that makes sense assuming they actually try it! Neither of the two people I mentioned have even ever tried a manual tranny...

Not at all? Not even started a manual, had it lurch forward, and stall?

I honestly have no idea and will probably never buy an automatic again (unless I marry someone who can't drive stick) since the automatic transmission costs money and is just another moving part that can go wrong down the road...

How long are automatic transmissions supposed to last, in general?
I have an auto with 110k on it that's running just fine.

Weeks? 15 minutes. 30 minutes maximum. If you're grinding gear after that, something's wrong.

Maybe it was easier for me since I'd ridden motorcycles before learning to drive a standard transmission. *shrugs*

I really don't understand automatics dominating the market for subcompact cars. An underpowered car, that is supposed to get good fuel economy, and be cheap, and people always spend an extra $1000 or so to get an automatic lose 5-10% on gas mileage, and have a slower car to boot.

I guess it's the price of wanting to chat on your cell phone the whole way to work and back.

It's my observation that it's usually a woman thing, but...

And a clutch should last at least 100,000 miles. I've seen them go to 200,000 miles on vehicles with lots of highway miles.

Most automatics are good for 80,000 to 150,000 miles. (Or, if it's a Chrysler, 3 miles. :p )
