FEAR and other games like to stutter on my computer.

First of all, it happens with about every single game I have, even older games stutter on my X1900XT, which shouldn't be happening. Before this, I had a 7800GT, and I had no stuttering on the 7800GT. The stuttering is like this: I'll run 10 feet in FEAR and it'll be choppy along the way, even with AA and all the shadows turned off(even the regular shadows), and every 10 feet or so, it'll freeze up for 5-7 seconds and then continue for 10 more feet where it'll lock up again.

Half Life 2: Lost Coast likes to stutter a bit, and when I get to the part where it's near where the wooden stair case breaks apart, it freezes up for 5 seconds.

Far Cry also has a little stuttering but overall performs OK, and Pacific Fighters, when starting a single mission, will start for 4 seconds and then will lock up for 2 seconds and then will go somewhat smoothly and do well.

I'm mainly playing at 1600*1200 with 4xAA and 16xAFHQ, which the X1900XT should be able to take, but it stutters with even no AA.

I have tried installing every ATI Catalyst driver and turning down the resolutions and AA and detail settings and it won't quit stuttering. It's mainly the DirectX games that do this, as the OpenGL games don't do this as much. I need your advice on how I can stop this stuttering and make my games run smooth for once.

My PSU is a PC Power and Cooling 510-SLI, BTW, and my CPU is an S939 Athlon 64 3500+ and I have 2 gigs of PC2700 ram. My motherboard is an Abit KN8 Ultra.

And yes, I used driver cleaner to get rid of the Nvidia drivers, but I didn't do a clean install of windows XP, but I don't know if a clean install of XP is needed or not, because I've read that it was, but I don't know for sure.

I turned FEAR down from 1600*1200 maxed out at 4xaa and 16xHQAF and went to 1152*864 with medium settings and no AA and the same AF settings and it helped some, but it still froze up for 2 seconds in the same areas. It happens everytime I enter a new room or area, and sometimes even when just walking around. The only thing that got rid of a good amount of the stuttering was 640*480 with ABSOLUTE MINIMUM SETTINGS.

Turns out I had V-sync on so I turned it off and although I do get the 5-second freeze ups when entering a new area, it performs much better now. 😱

ahaha hopefully this won't turn out like the one in the Video forum...

😀

have you installed the lateset chipset drivers?

I got my motherboard back in november when I got the 3500+, 2 gigs of ram, and 7800GT. I installed the chipset drivers off the CD that came with my motherboard, so I don't know if the latest drivers are installed or not. My motherboard is an Abit KN8 Ultra, which is Nforce 4 ultra, so I don't know if the chipset is the latest or not. And I promise that I'll do my best not to make it be like the one in the video forum. 🙂

only reformat your computer if everything else doesn't work. and if that doesnt work then you got some messed up vid card

The Soundblaster Live! 24-bit sound card(got it a bit after I got the 7800GT, didn't cause stuttering on the 7800GT).

Might be the CPU or Ram Speed bottleneck for the extreme settings. Then again, did you use DriverCleaner when going from Nvidia to ATI?

Yes I did use the DriverCleaner. And an AMD 64 3500+ wouldn't bottleneck a X1900XT that much, because it didn't bottleneck a 7800GT that much, either. It was at PC2700 with my 7800GT and it didn't stutter.

However, I've heard that when going from Nvidia to ATI or vice versa, that a fresh reinstall of the OS is necessary. Is that true?

That Nforce 4 chipset driver was on September 12, 2005, and I got my mobo in November, so wouldn't the CD have that chipset on it or what? I checked Everest Home edition and it says that my revision is A3 for the north bridge and south bridges. How do I check my current chipset drivers, because I want to know what they are so I can tell you guys before I download a driver, so that I won't be getting the same driver.

BTW, how do you go about updating the chipset drivers, should there be later ones than what I have when I find out? Is it like upgrading the drivers to a video or sound card, or is there more to it?

I would just download the latest chipset driver and run it. You won't hurt anything. I also doubt that any manufacturer continually updates the CDs that they ship with the products. I may be wrong.

The chipset drivers will come in an exe, so you download, double-click, "I Agree", install, restart, and done. Takes a coupla minutes. You can do the same with your video drivers from the ati website.

Reason I asked is because I vaguely remember someone else having issues with a X1900XT and a Creative sound card. I'm off to scour the forums/web.

So downloading newer chipset drivers is about the same as new video card drivers, and there's no special thing to it.

Wouldn't this driver work instead of the one on the Abit KN8 site?

First thing to do is to pull the sound card. My creative soundard is a massive improvement over my onboard sound, but it's got more bugs than the insect house at london zoo.

If the problems go away then you know the cause, otherwise you've just wasted 15mins pulling a functioning PCI card out, whoops 😱

I would probably go for a reinstall of windows to clean out those driver remains, but that's pretty extreme. You may just need to defrag your hard drive.

Could be your internet connection......also could be your memory.....

I didn't get the stutters when I had the 7800GT, and I got the soundcard back in January, and then I kept the 7800GT for 2 months more before going for the X1900XT, so the soundcard couldn't be the problem, because I didn't get stutters even with the soundcard with the 7800GT.

And how is my rig link broken? Where does my rig link lead to?

I've downloaded the new Nvidia Nforce 4 chipset drivers, so now that I'm ready to begin installing it, what are the steps I should I take during the installation? I want to make sure I know the steps before I do this. Do I need to uninstall the older version first?

I got a folder named NV37843788.TMP and in the folder is a little file named nvide.nvu, and under it is NVU file and 4kb large. Does that have anything to do with Nvidia?
