FDR's D-Day prayer

The D-day landing on the Normandy beaches was an audacious gamble that could have flopped badly. Among other things Hitler was taking a nap and no one had the guts to wake him. And the hopes and lives of many nations was placed on a vast stage---at moments like these its often customary to beg the assistance of Almighty God---the question is was Almighty God even bothering to listen? But the audacious gamble came off partly due to excellent planning and some luck.

Its always best to hedge your bets with good planning. Its a certainty that many Germans were beseeching the same God to have the invasion fail. And more importantly, we are still winning the peace in Europe as I write this.
 
Yes, I have read the address before. Reagans D-day address on the 40th anniversary played on the radio yesterday. That, too, is excellent.
 
It saddens me greatly that a majority of this forum finds the images and words of this "prayer" to be disgusting...even if FDR was a Democrat.
 
It's propaganda insofar as it tries to conflate the morally justified WWII and the morally dubious Iraq war.

It's the old trick of 'innocence by assosication', like when you see politicians with babies and puppies and don't consider who they're sending billions of tax dollars to.

Nothing wrong with the speech *for D-DAY*; it's wrong to steal it for the Iraq war, and just highlights how Bush can't speak out for his own war.
 
I?ve read two books just about D-day and there was really almost no chance of failure.
Even if the Germans had reacted in the entirely correct manor they still would have never been able to force the allies into the sea.
The allies had too much fire power, men and air cover.

Of course it was still a HUGE gamble, and had it failed it would have added another year to the war, worse the Russians might have taken ALL of Germany before we could get on the mainland.
