78 flights of stairs is alot of running.

Yeah, but I've ALWAYS been told to avoid elevators at all costs during a fire/emergency, yet the firemen head there first?

They are equipped to break out of a stalled elevator should the need arise. Also they had 20 pounds of equipment on them with 75 stories to climb. I'd take my chances.

My guess is that after seeing what they saw they may have just needed to get back down ASAP to let someone know. Maybe their radio's weren't working (We didn't even have radios when I was volunteering..)

Why were they taking the elevator down?

Next time you are in an elevator look at the console. There are special operating instructions for firemen. They have the ability to override the elevator so they can go directly to the floor they want to go to without stopping. They can also open the door at anytime they want to as well, even between floors. General public should stay off the elevator when there is a fire, but they are built to allow firemen to use them.

Cool. I didn't know that. That's what I get for living in a place where there are relatively few multi-story buildings...especially that I frequent. 🙂

What's that supposed to mean?

It's supposed to mean that SuperSix is a small-minded, petty person who would rather drag politics where it doesn't belong than focus on the bravery of the firefighters in that story.

Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta told the families that he had not known the tape existed until very recently. Later, he declined to discuss its contents, but said it had a powerful effect on him. "Every time I've seen videotapes, listened to audio recordings or read the accounts of firefighters and their actions on Sept. 11, I've felt the same thing: an extraordinary sense of awe at their incredible professionalism and bravery."

That sums it up pretty well, I think.
