FDISKING the MBR

A friend of mine is running WinME and his computer won't boot up anymore. I was wondering if tyring to use the command FDISK MBR could be a possible solution, since I remember that when my computer wouldn't boot into win2k because of lilo, that is what I had to do. At any rate, what happens after the MBR is FDISKED?

What do you mean by "won't boot?" Does it POST? Will it load anything?

Before doing anything drastic, check to make sure that all cables are tight, the PCU is seated and tight, etc. Use a bootable floppy. Does it boot to A:> ? Can you then access C:> ?

If you can access C:, run SCANREG.EXE in DOS and let the system registry revert to an earlier date before all this started.

If the problem is the MBR (not really likely) then fdisk /mbr could possible fix it. ME has a good RESTORE function if you can manage to even get it to load in SAFE MODE.

Running fdisk /mbr can screw up some mfg computers that use a product recovery cd.

If this is a custom built computer.. then fdisk /mbr wont hurt anything.

I doubt running that will help that system at all.

What is the error msg he is getting?

I don't know what exactly is wrong. I'll have to find out. All he said is that it gets power but doesn't bring up anything. When the mbr is fdisked does it get rewritten too on the next boot up or what and how does it know what needs to be written?
