UPDATE: GETDATABACK WORKED! 😀

Here's the story. I have 2 40GB hard drives in this layout:

HDD 1
________________

System (C: )

--------------------------
Documents (D: )
________________

HDD 2

________________

Media (E: )

________________

So C and D are partitioned, and E is by itself. I wanted to format, so I moved all my documents (D) and personal system files from (C) onto media (E). After I did that, I formatted D and then I went to DOS. Using Fdisk I deleted the C and D partitions and made a new partition of just C. That had 40GB. I formatted as NTFS and installed windows again. To my horror my new D: (my old E, with all the backup data) is completely blank. What happened?! And how can I get it back, that's 4 years of backup data....

Anything I can do or am I SOL? Maybe I didn't Fdisk right?

edit: there's NO way I can get it back? I didn't even format my old E: drive! 🙁!!!

I feel for ya as I believe I've done that myself. I understand that sometimes DOS reports the drives differently from that of Windows, i.e. different drive letters. If you can't find ya data that was on drive E: (now D: ) I think you've had it...sorry 🙁

When you FDisk you get a message that says "All data will be lost. Are you sure Y/N?"... nuff said 🙁

Yes, but that was with my other HDD, not with the old E:? OH damn...

Cmon data recovery software? I can't even find my latest backup anymore from CD! 🙁

what software would you recommend? oops, i started to redownload some files and saved them there.. :S

I feel for ya.......🙁

Future thought......"I will unplug my backup drive before I reload, then I can't mess it up."

All fdisk should have done is deleted the partition table, the fat/data should still be in place, if you could restore the table manually (not using fdisk to recreate) you should in theory be able to recover data

or if you used something to scan the drive for files and recover them to your other two partitions.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES WRITE TO THAT DRIVE!

I was able to recover my files after even formating my drive.

THANK GOD! 😀 This is working like a charm... omg all my data files are back.. being back anyways, now I don't have to redownload all my mp3s! 😀 Thanks!!!

You got lucky with your recovery this time 🙂

was it 100 or near 100%?

did you have to buy the program, or was the demo enough?

Almost 100%. I can't even tell if I'm missing anything anymore, it hit all critical spots. 🙂 I had to pay for it to work, the trial would only let me view the files... I saw that there were a lot, so I said... Alright, it's try it, so I bought it and Wow. And it works! 🙂

Any recovery is better than nothing. At least now you have some software should you ever run into a problem like this again, so far I've never had to use any software like that (knock on wood.)
