I took my test as soon as I could after the Morse Code mandate was dropped,
in Feb 2007.

I had wanted to do this since 1970.

I passed my Tech and General tests Feb 28, 2007, and then passed my Extra test
March 10,2007.

Who else here is a "Ham"?

Nice thread bump caveman.

I got my Technician license back in high school just because I was in the club and it was pretty easy to get it. I barely renewed my license in time when it came up. The only thing that really interests me now about it is the usefulness during disasters.

Question: for Christmas next year, I'm doing one of those synchronized light shows with a small FM transmitter. With an FCC license, would I be able to use a higher powered transmitter, say... one that would broadcast for 4 miles? (Because then, if I purchased the equipment, I wouldn't bother with Sirius or something like that... work is 4 miles away - I could listen to my own music on my own commercial free radio station. :) )

You cannot broadcast copyrighted material without a license or permission from the material owner.

You would get shut down so fast your head would spin.

Doesn't matter. The only time Morse code would come in handy is during the evil aliens from outer space invasion. :sneaky:

I'm an avid scanner enthusiast and tried to get my ham radio lic back in '97 and failed. LOL I wasn't well prepared and they added some EPA questions about RF exposure.

Terminators receive a shortwave transmission to coordinate. :D

Can someone explain the point to getting a FCC radio license? What can I do with a license that I otherwise couldn't without it?

Do you mean an amateur radio license? Well, for one you can't broadcat on those frequencies with out a license. People who aren't amateur radio operators are limited to Family radios or FRS for short and CB. That's it unless you want to get a GMRS license or if you run a businesses you get a businesses radio licensee.

Internet has really killed off amateur...

Anyone can stroll into a store, buy a phone, pc, etc. Install skype and talk to anyone.

What fun is that?

The old days it was fun to erect an antenna, tune it, and do some dx'ing on such modest power. When conditions are right the person you hear come back to you sounds like your neighbor pounding your receive at thirty dB over nine, crystal clear. And you find out they are half way across the globe! Then before you know it their signal fades into the oblivion of the noise floor possibly never to be heard at your shack again! That's what the hobby is all about.

When the infrastructure fails, no internet, no power, these radios will be worth more than their weight in gold! All the kids on facebook, etc. won't be laughing at the guy down the road with the towers and big beams...then!

CBs are still quite popular in many areas of the Caribbean and Mexico. Some of those guys run some pretty serious footwarmers (linear amps) with tens of thousands of watts effective radiated power from their huge beams. They also tend to overmodulate badly and the "splatter" really gets annoying to surrounding services.

CW is actually good for the long shots, it will punch through QRM better than any other service and is universal. Watering down the requirements is a double edged sword but some techies get addicted to code and can belt out the keys almost as fast as people can type!

I use to have a CB ant that was erected on a 20' mast I made back in the late 90's. I had used a SSB CB. I barley used it and still have it today. Perhaps when the proverbial shit hits the fan it will be worth something. When I go on road trips I bring it or the scanner and listen to truckers. Great for knowing on what's going on in case of a car accident or knowing if the fuzz is around. I'm more into scanners now and had a DX-394 shortwave radio and an IC-R3. I actually heard the Cuban numbers station on my IC-R3 handheld. Like to buy it again on eBay. Now a days all the damn police are going encrypted including my town in 2015 and you can't hear them. If they use DES-OFB or ADP you can use a SDR and decode it, but if they use AES your SOL. One day I'm sure someone will hack it.

Packed up all my ham and dx gear two years ago and threw in the towel. All the RFI coming from all the new LCD and Plasma screens put a damper on the hobby.

Try some ferrites on the coax?

The bands have been hopping.

I have worked the DXpedition 5J0R on 4 bands 10, 15, 17, and 20m.
Welcome to 5J0R - San Andres 2013 DXpedition web site, where we'll give information about our DXpedition.
The operation will be on the air from the 1st to the 11th of November.
