These things usually work that the goverment gets them secretly. If it's known they have them, they're less effective.

In the 50's, Western Union used to let the FBI copy all telegrams sent every day for its secret perusal. Bush had warrantless wiretapping secretly set up with phone companies (though Verizon refused).

lol, why does every bill like this use child pornography as its crutch?

Because the mere thought of child pornography elicits an emotional response.

Much more so than pirating movies, music, software, committing identify theft, etc. I'm sure these would be some of the first things the law is used for. But it won't be long before the information is used to destroy political opponents, etc.

Is it possible to use the 'I had open wi-fi' defense?

You can use any defense you like. The legal system is bent every day to give the government/corporations more power. What will it be on your particular day? You'll have to go in and find out....

Well seeing as Amoricans seem to tolerate the 'patriot' act among other things, I am sure this is just another step towards our Orwellian future.

I'm sure they want warrant-less arrests and troikas as well. But the people are supposed to stop them from obtaining such things.

Because taking pictures of kids is apparently much worse than killing people. Seriously, if they said this new system would "help solve thousands of unsolved murders" I really don't think anyone would care.

Come to think of it, didn't someone suggest a system to track everyone's DNA? That way a random hair found at a crime scene would point to a specific person found in the database. That idea was scrapped because murder and rape in the US are not a big deal and the bitch probably deserved it anyway. Finding creepy people who watch really weird porn? This is top priority!

I don' visit a single site I'd be worried about the FBI looking into. While I don't care to have my privacy violated, since I don't do shit wrong, and this could very well lead to some sickfuck pedpos getting sent to prison. Then go ahead and violate my rights so some small children kids can possibly be saved from bullshit like this.

@ QueBert - yeah...it's like the airport - all the extra security is a pain, but I'd rather deal with it than have it be totally open to terrorists. There are a lot of messed-up people in this world, and the Internet offers total anonymity so people can get as screwed up as they want, which spills out into real-life.

Plus they're monitoring everything already, so who cares.../puts on tinfoil hat :hmm:

Yea, fuck privacy. I want the grand protector to know everything about me. I'm looking forward to the time brain implants become practical. That way if I accidentally have seditious thoughts, the grand protector can "reeducate" me, so those bad thoughts won't ruin my life, or allow me to become a poor servant...err citizen...

Slippery Slope.

Do you do any of the following?:
  • Download pirated music?
  • Download pirated movies?
  • Download pirated software?
  • Discuss political viewpoints that may be in contrast with the viewpoint of the government? (Such as legalizing marijuana, or organizing protests, etc)
  • Allow people other than yourself to use your internet connection?
  • Use a Wifi access point relying on WEP or WPA as your security method, or open wifi?
  • A myriad of other possibilities

If so, you might want to think before you start handing over your rights.
