FBI Wants Backdoors to Facebook, Twitter Immediately

I hope they use the data to round up all of the stupid haters and haul them off to "internment camps." Only the stupidest criminals would have incriminating stuff on those services.

This kind of big brother intrusion was inevitable. We all knew it was coming since the internet was born. There aren't any safe sectors or areas of your life that the government cannot look into if they want.

I don't worry about it too much, but the time will come when abuses of access to these systems (social media) will be commonplace. Corporations are already happy to take the information you freely give away , now the government wants a piece of the pie. Since "friending" the FBI doesn't seem a likely opt-in option, they have to get access by pressure/force.

EDIT: I'm not anti-government or anything, just stating what I see. I don't care either way, I've got nothing of value to the government or anyone else for that matter.
- Do you buy things? Then advertisers want your information.
- Do you have opinions about things? Some people might think that they're subversive or otherwise undesirable, and that they should be illegal to express or even have.
Prospective employers might also be very interested to know what kind of things you buy, and what opinions you may have.

After seeing stories like this all the time, you would think that most people would be smart enough not to post anything private on a social networking site.

I follow a simple rule myself... if I wouldn't want to see it on the local news, I don't post it.

I guess that common sense isn't as common as it should be.

The US government is growing more and more corrupt by the day. It's getting ridiculous. When you think about it, when's the last time they made a decision that is for the people, and not themselves? All these decisions are strictly in their very own interests and harm everyone else. SOPA, PIPA, ACTA, CISPA (which they snuck in the other day, it passed) building that NSA spy data center etc.... All of this crap is only for them. Using YOUR tax dollars. It's like buying someone a gun so he can shoot you and your family. If I lived in the states this would be the year I'd strongly be considering to move to another country.

People need to make it a point to post hundred of thousands of cat and baby pictures on their Facebook. They will most likely be analyzing all the pictures everyone posts for terrorist data as there are ways to hide messages in pictures. So lets drive them insane.

if they need a warrant to use it I don't have any problem with it.

Warrants don't really mean much. It's just a bit more paperwork, but the end result is still that they will do whatever they want once they have access to all that data. I honestly don't really care specifically about Facebook as I don't really post much on there, but iti's the principal that's wrong. They need to GTFO of our private lives and screw off. It's almost like they have this fetish of wanting to see everyone's private lives. It's actually kinda sick when you think about it.

I was under the impression they were already doing this many years ago. Since the whole Myspace boom.

I remember reading an article that there was law enforcement unit within Myspace organization that would keep a strong-arm on things when it came to shit like child predators, criminals & the like.

Then what, a year ago? Someone was busted from FB with the private messages being the key evidence. Or something like that.

But ok. That's great.

I'm not sure why they'd be making a big deal of this either, them & other government agencies probably already have placed spies somewhere in these organizations.

They sniff all the traffic that crosses on any US router/server, but I was not aware of them actually already having access to the FB servers. Then again as long as the sniffing continues that alone is enough to get all the data they need. The NSA can also decrypt SSL in minutes, if that, so even SSL sites are kinda useless for privacy from big brother.
