How do we know if the plans he was selling them were tainted plans? Perhaps done purposely?

I don't know anyone so patriotic or so rich that they don't have a price.

Being loyal to your country went away with the McCarthy trials and Vietnam. About the only place you will still see loyalty is on the Brady Bunch.

Okay, hold it there for a second...

Does it really matter what we do to this guy? You forget that once a spy is discovered, he/she is harmless instantly.
You also seem to forget that if there's one spy, there can easily be hundreds more. Every member of the FBI is a possible spy.

The same counts for Russia. Their whole country can be crammed with spies from every possible country. That's because spies don't tell everyone that they're spies.

And referring to the superiority of Russian technology: Those guys in Russia are good. Their only problem is that they're seriously short on money and control at this moment. That's why so many Russians want to go back to Communism. Communism simply made of Russia the worldpower. The current country is less than a faded image of the mighty country it once was.

yes, it does matter what we do to this guy. As you point out, there are hundreds of fbi agents who could be spies. This guy needs to lose everything he has, including his life as an example of what happens when you willingly betray your country for profit.

In my opinion, the only thing lower than this guy are the people who would defend him.

Turdorf: You are an idiot.

First of all, treason, even light treason should be punished by death. No questions asked, just death.

Second of all, if the russians are so stupid then why is it that america was scared sh|tless od war with them for decades?
Please man, they have everything that the americans have and in some cases better things. Not to mention that they had to do it all on a budget many times smaller then what they have in the U.S. Sure, its falling behind now but thats because of lack of funding.

And you think that those spies aren't aware of the risk they're taking? They know that if their role as spy is discovered, they're in big trouble. Executing this guy won't change that.

BTW I'm not defending spies, I just don't think that murder is a good solution to problems.

No he did not do anything wrong.

The internet and the world economy eliminates the need for seperate nations.

Being a spy seems like a fun lifestyle.

Imagine no country!!!

OK, so let's give him the benefit of the doubt - even though he was a threat. Stuff like that would be coordinated through the proper authorities, so things like this wouldn't happen. I really can't see how you can stick up for this scum :|

Boberfett, you better watch out. Iran executes people who have persistent bad breath.

did he do something wrong? yes. he is a spy and should be drawn and quartered. piece of garbage...

let me ask you something, if i got ahold of the plans for an "outdated" nuclear weapon (because there are much more powerful ones now) and sold it to another nation, would i be wrong? yes.

if i wanted to get more money to put my kids though school thats fine... but doing it by selling drugs is not fine... do you understand?

40k is quite a lot of money... you can live off of it comfortably in america... add that to his FBI salary and he was most likely making approximately 140k+... he should be shot

end of story.

Yes, it really is so bad!

<< The Russians ability to use titanium is (or was, at least -- going on old data here) beyond the US' ability to match. Their Alpha-class attack submarines have titanium hulls which enables them to dive deeper than US boats. Why didn't the US make its own to match? THEY COULDN'T. >>

Guess which country is the world's largest producer of titanium? Russia. The U.S. has a very limited resource of titanium compared to the Russians. Pound for pound, U.S. titanium is much more expensive than Russian titanium. And at the time, I don't think the Russians were going to sell us any titanium. Although, they might today.

feisters, pick up Skunk Works by Ben Rich. He was the one the succeeded Kelly Johnson at the famed Lockheed Skunk Works. They needed high grade titanium for the RS-71 (Later SR-71 :)). The titanium produced in the US was very inconsistant and often fell below the grade needed for the plane. Guess who was the world's largest producer of high grade titanium. Yup, the ole USSR. Several dummy companies were setup and Lockheed managed to get the titanium needed to build the plane that helped bring down the Soviet Union.

The thing that no one has touched on is that he's an American, not a Russian. Russian spys usually go right back to Russia (often in exchange for ours). American traitors die.

It's not a moral outrage that Russia has spies, it's a moral outrage that one of our guys turned on us.

Pattysmear, are you trying to flamebait or what?

Do you really think that the FBI gave all the newspapers, radio station, and TV the honest to god truth of what happened? Do you believe everything you read. In a normal story in the newpspaper there is about 25% false stuff thrown in. When you talk internation stories, about 50% of the stuff is false or exaggerated. But, we, I mean you believe that this guy was a spy? Do you believe in the tooth fairy too? You've not only believe the 75% falseities in the news, but you already have found the guy guilty, and ready to kill him. This is how lynch mobs start. This fellow has already pleaded NOT GUILTY and until we hear his side of the story, you should stop making judgement from the lies and exaggerations the newspapers spread. Your the idiot. Do you judge everyone before you hear both sides? Everyone deserves their day in court.

OK Turdorf:

<< So they caught Hanssens selling info to the Russians >>

TADA! He's qualified as a spy commiting treason. If it's a fact they caught him selling info to Russia, there's nothing to debate. Can I ask why you're so insistant on defending this bastard?

Having worked in the newspaper businss for some time, I'm quite sure that there are very few facts published. What is published is what the FBI wants everyone, including the Russians to believe. There are so many possible alternative answers to what happend, it's truly amazing to me how easily everyone believes that this guy really is a spy and should be shot. The power of the press is very strong! It will make people believe most anything!

They are named Liberals. A small, and growing smaller, minority!

He will get his day in court. In this country, and with the importance of the charge, nothing will be hidden.

PattySmear...I've really been trying not to make you look like an idiot which could easily be done by responding to you.....really I am. You do the job so well yourself.

Turdorf
It is my belief that the vast majority of Americans would NEVER commit treason for monetary gain. Of course we had Clinton as President for 8 long years so I might be mistaken!:(

Yep it is. Too bad for the spy you aren't in control, I'm sure he'd be glad if you were :)

Even if what the man did caused no harm whatsoever (which we alrady know is not the case), he was not following orders and that is an important part of that type of job.
