WASHINGTON (AP) -- The FBI said Friday it has shut down an e-mail system that it uses to communicate with the public because of a possible security breach.

The bureau is investigating whether someone hacked into the www.fbi.gov e-mail system, which is run by a private company, officials said.

"We use these accounts to communicate with you folks, view Internet sites, and conduct other non-sensitive bureau business such as sending out press releases," Special Agent Steve Lazarus, the FBI's media coordinator in Atlanta, said in an e-mail describing the problem.

How do you use an email server to view internet sites?
Someone probably got access to user accounts (i.e. their login server). They probably use the same login names for their computer access and their email addresses, and they got confused. :)

No wonder I was getting e-mail from the FBI asking if I wanted a bigger pen15...

I was associated with the group global Hell awhile back, around 97+ ish.

I ran across a kid who wanted to be "down," not someone in the group but someone who was just around and wanting to be involveed with the group, anyways... during a breach, he got into a mail server that he couldn't reverse DNS so he wasn't sure whose it was. Well he finally got into it and it turns out it was a central NASA mail server.

He freaked out and rm -rf'd the box.

Yea, they got him within 24 hours and I haven't seen or heard of him since.

oh yea I almost forgot my original point, whoever did that is hit.

[edit]

Now that I think of it, I have contributed exactly nothing to this thread. Essentially all I have accomplished is letting you know that I know the kid screwed himself.

Which I am pretty confident you all drew that conclusion by yourselves, and without my help.

Maybe I should think these replies through a little bit more in the future.

HAHA. IDIOT. At first, I thought he rm -rf'd *HIS* box, which would've been my natural reaction.

I felt kind of bad for the kid, he had no intention of messing with Gov property but hey, he played the game and lost, big time.

Back then people would keep huge magnets close by so when the Fed's came kicking in your door, you could scramble to your box and rape all your data with a huge magnet in seconds.

Negative. Explosives are the only way.

Edit: I once rigged an insane electromagnet inside one of my drive cages with a switch on the front panel. One day, I tested it. After 10 minutes, I could actually RECOVER DATA using commercially available software.

I guess that explains why pretty much everyone got raided arrested and sentenced anyways.
